Do you have the power? Are you the one?

From the developers of Rune Factory 4, we have Lord of Magna! The game revolves around a boy who inherits his father's hotel and must search for 7 mysterious girls (due to plot reason.) My favorite aspect of the game is its art style, which is simply adorable. It feels like a slice of life anime turned into a video game. Despite being an RPG, it leans more towards being a visual novel. However, the combat system is one of the worst I have experienced. It's bland, tedious, and the enemies respawn at the beginning of every turn, leading to repeated battles from chapter one. It's a pretty short game, and if it didn't have such a tedious combat system, it would be even shorter.enter image description here

The entire game is cut-scenes and poorly-explained combat.

This game has a very unique combat system. That, and its cute art, are the main selling points. However, they don't explain the combat well enough for you to get the hang of it, and because it's so unique (there's a sort of bowling/dominos mechanism to it), it's not really intuitive enough to just muddle through on your own.

The game is similar to Fire Emblem in that there is no free exploration. You have a home base you can wander around and talk to people in, but the entire game is triggering cutscenes that lead to battles (and frequently return to the same exact combat field multiple times).

So you have to either really love the combat or really love the story to enjoy the game. Unfortunately, the combat is hard to understand. There are status effects and abilities that have no in-game explanation whatsoever, just symbols over characters heads and obscure names. For example, you collect "buttons" off of certain enemies. There is a "topaz button" and a "yellow button," with tooltips that say "The bellybutton of a Stitch enemy" or "This character's favorite accessory!" And that's... all you get. One of them boosts your character's stats (which …

One of them boosts your character's stats (which stats? don't know!) and the other is an attack. You don't know that until you use them, though. So it's just... very frustrating.

As for the story, there are a bunch of "fairies" - cute anime girls - who call you their "master." They are psychically linked to you, and their life force is literally tied in to your will. They can only grow and become stronger by building an affectionate relationship with you. So it's.... kind of disturbing. There's a harem anime vibe, but it's taken a step further where these girls literally will cease to be alive without you. Ehhh. Squicks me out. No thanks (especially since some of them look and sound decidedly underage).

I'm on the fence about the combat... I just wish there were more tooltips or helpful guides since I've never seen this style before at all. Characters get status affects that are symbols but you can't like, tap the symbols to explain what they are. And you have items that you can use as attacks, and instead of helpful information about what exactly it does (there was 0% indication that 'Yellow Button' was a speed boost whereas 'Topaz Button' was an AOE lmao), you get cutesy tooltips about how "This is Brigette's favorite accessory!" or "It's a Stitch's button, a literal belly button hehe!" THANKS BUT WHAT DOES IT DOOOO. lmao.

If I liked the story more, I'd probably be willing to work through it, but...... this one has a lot more fan service than I'm used to from those kinds of games. It plays out more like a harem anime about a guy with like 9 magical girls who are all obsessed with him/vaguely subservient to him.... They call him master and he has a bracelet that literally powers their life force since they have no souls, and when he makes them feel special, a light appears on their …

I might stick with it just a little bit longer to see if I can get a handle on this combat..... otherwise I'm probably out.

Not sure I appreciate the extremely linear storytelling of this game. It feels like a tutorial that isn't letting me finally explore the game for myself... but I suspect it's less that and more like Fire Emblem, where the game is basically battles in between cut scenes.

The combat is... different, and challenging. I'm not sure if I just don't understand the mechanics very well, or if the levels are designed to overwhelm you with enemies. Combat is done bowling-style... you're meant to knock enemies into other enemies in a large cluster, for a domino effect... but literally every round, the enemies respawn the exact same number as were there before.

Maybe I need to lay off the story for a bit and go play some grinding "free" battles, at least until I figure out what on earth I'm supposed to be doing lol...

The art style's really cute, and the battle system is unique from anything else I've played. However, the game is around 85% cutscene.
