What a trip down memory lane this game was. Oh I so remember playing to reach top 1 in this game back in the day in Ultimate Battle mode. And now, a while later, here I am, with the game fully completed. I got all the characters, top 1 in Ultimate battle and completed all the World Tournament stages. So, is this game as good as I remember? Well, it is quite slow. Especially the menus, I started toggling to X2 speed in my emulator ever since Freeza saga. But the moment to moment combat is fun. Combos are a bit basic and some abilities do WAY too much damage, but overall I had a good time during my playthrough. Collecting Dragon Ball Z however is boring. Especially since, for all characters+ the secret story section, you have to collect them many times. And playing the same Chiaozu vs Guldo mission 40 times is not the pinnacle of fun. Story mode is not immersive at all, if you did not watch the show this is not where to take your dose of intel in the story of dragon ball z. It is basically not bothered explaining the player what is …

It is basically not bothered explaining the player what is going on in the story, and just assumes that if it gives you a reminder of what was generally going on at the beginning of each stage you'll know what it is all about. I did however see the show (and all the movies and DBZ GT) so for me everything is panned out nicely. The sagas from GT are not present in the game, just the fight with Baby Vegeta, but there are all SSJ4 characters (probs just because they look cool af). No Omega Shenron and no Pan though, which is a shame. Despite those 2 notable absences, there are A LOT of characters in this game. All the important characters in the series appear here, with the entire Ginyu force, every iteration of Majin Buu and all major movie villains being present. Indeed a treat in this regard. Gonna mention though, if you wanna play the game, don't forget that some characters are unlockable through fusioning items in the Evolution Z. And some are quite notable, like all SSJ 4 characters, SSJ 4 Gogeta, Perfect Cell, Majin Vegeta, Mecha Freeza etc. I never understood the sense of this additional step but oh well, a bit of work for the best characters is not so bad. And it also requires the player to know stuff about the anime in order to get those, since fusions need to be done based on how the characters appeared in the anime. Some are easy, some not so much. There's always a guide online for the latest of them. Top 100 is still the funniest mode. It is the most challenging, it is satisfying to beat, does not overstay its welcome since fights are not so long (I finished it in around 4-5 hours). World Tournament stages are easy feets, finishable most likely in under 1h if you are efficient at doing Ring outs. Cell games are a bit more challenging, but those are manageable too since by the time a player gets to them, he'll have most of the cast unlocked. In the end, I think this is a good fighting game first and foremost, and beyond that it is made with love and care for the DBZ franchise (back when games really gave proper love to Goku and his friends). Perhaps it is nostalgia that made me enjoyed it so much, but I do believe that, if you're looking for a good fighting game and you are familiar with the adventures of the Z fighters, this game will bring you back and you wont regret your time spent with it.
