Another shoot ‘em up game on the GBA. It’s good and very similar to Astro Boy: Omega Factor, a game made by the same company treasure. Honestly I would’ve rated this game higher but it’s just too hard on hard mode. Maybe I’m just struggling to learn this games strats and aren’t good enough but trying to get the hard mode true ending is absolutely insane IMO. Part of me appreciates the added bonus to completing games on hard mode and getting the real ending but sometimes I don’t like the story being gatekeeper by extreme difficulty. Good game nonetheless especially on normal mode, and can be beat in a day easily.
This GBA sequel to Gunstar Heroes (review) checks some of the same boxes as that oustanding predecessor. It’s got the fast-paced and explosive action, some of the same flashy style and varied encounter design ideas, and so on.
It should be a recipe for greater success, but it straight-up rehashes a whole lot of the exact same level and encounter ideas from the first game while feeling like a step back in several ways.
Unsurprisingly for a GBA game, the sound and visuals are not quite as good, and that was a key part of why the first game felt so amazing. This kind of action feels a bit cramped at the system’s tiny screen size. Mechanically, the first game’s cool main gimmick of mixing weapons is totally gone, and melee options felt generally worse to me.
What it does add is a few little levels that mix up the gameplay, sadly usually for the worse. One early one for example has you roaming around a rotating level collecting baby chickens (?) to take back to the entrance, as monsters lunge at you and send the chickens back to their starting place. It’s really annoying, awkward, and out …

But when it’s doing Gunstar Heroes stuff, it’s still fun, even if it feels like a weakened echo of the game that came before. It almost feels more like an odd remake/reboot or a tribute to the first game, which is okay but a bit disappointing—I feel I would have been better off just replaying that. I would not call this essential, but it’s reasonably impressive for the GBA. Just go for the much better Treasure GBA game Astro Boy: Omega Factor before picking this up, or some of their more well-known titles.
Mikä sitten on muttunut?
Gunstar Super Heroes on todella hyvä toimintapeli. Harmillisesti Treasure on vaipunut hiljaiseloon, joten tuskin näemme olisiko kolmannella Gunstarilla isoin kengänkoko.
The sequel I never knew existed for one of my favorite games. And I wish it stayed that way. Two long frustrating hours of repetative boss fights, obnoxious RNG and poor writing. I could've been playing Dracula X but instead I chose this.
