Port of Tom and Jerry: Frantic Antics!
3.00 average rating based on 24 ratings
Preliminary: Apparently the Gameboy version was released first so that's the version I am playing. The controls are undeniably slippery, but I am enjoying the fast-paced gameplay, there is a Run feature, and I like the roll attack while running. Oh and the end-of-level jingle is nice
But I hope there gets to be some variety soon. Another level of the same basic setting and wrecking balls etc? Also hoping the non-linear structure to the levels (albeit with arrows pointing, thankfully) doesn't get to be too annoying.
Welp right after writing that, I played as Jerry and it was a partly water level and there was even a boss. Definitely brought some variety, nice.
Lol why is Jerry's face so creepy in the bottom right after eating a health collectibles
Day 1
The maze like aspects are definitely coming out more in Level 6 and on. I like it to an extent but I always prefer straightforward platformers. I have come upon a couple secrets which is neat, and I like the optional collectible option which is always good for replayability if I had this as a kid, and I both like and dislike that you can walk through some …

The maze like aspects are definitely coming out more in Level 6 and on. I like it to an extent but I always prefer straightforward platformers. I have come upon a couple secrets which is neat, and I like the optional collectible option which is always good for replayability if I had this as a kid, and I both like and dislike that you can walk through some walls: I like it when I stumble upon it, I dislike it since that means I am probly missing a lot of the game :-p
Despite the confusing layouts I keep stumbling upon the end etc.
I never prefer infinitely respawning enemies. A lot of this game oddy reminds me of Metroid.
This has so many Play aspects that I normally dislike: time limit despite a somewaht non-linear structure including even item retrieval quests, gocha moments, incredibly slippery controls esp with the small platforms they sometimes chose to have, and inescapable deaths if-you-chose-the-wrong-path aka just trial and error set up. I started abusing savestates in those situations, because that is just a time sink (which is understandable, you want people to get lots of playtime from your game, but in this context, no thanks). I pretty much knew it'd get a 3 star (tho I was hoping the addictive Play would rationalize a 4 star despite its faults), and like usual convinced myself to play till the end like I expected a great ending or a tune or Play mechanics that would boost it to a 4. Instead I got this as an ending :-p

Look: 7/10
Sound: 7/10 I never muted it, which is impressive for a Gameboy game, but nothing notable.
Play: 7/10 As much as this deserves a 6.5 or lower, I can't deny that I played it start to finish in one sitting.
Feel: 7/10 If I were more into Tom and Jerry, this could've boosted it. But never really watched it
Attachment: 7/10 Unlikely to replay, but don't necessarily regret playing through it lol. Smh. Me and 1993. Very few 5 stars or Favorites, yet lots and lots of 3 stars (which used to really mean something for the 80s games). I suppose for 92, too, most my 5 stars came in the end of it, since often the new technology and most ambitious projects are released intentionally around the Winter holidays. Hmmm
Overall: 7/10
Completion: Main Story
Playtime: ~1 hour
