Believe it or not but this game alone actually got me into pinball. Probably because it very clearely visually explained concept of modes, progressing through levels and hitting targets.
On conventional pinball tables all that is somewhat hidden in the sea of flashing lights. And usually you should read the table manual in order to know what to target with the ball.
But here all that was very clear and I could appreciete the pinball as a type of game with actuall progression, not just a game where you only try to keep the ball on the table.
I have never played metroid game so the theme shouldnt stop you. The dual screen of DS also works well as the table stretchess across both screens.
Give it a try. It might surprise you.
Recently replayed this for the first time in 17 years. The graphics are very good on the DS and it has great sound and mechanics. It allows you to play minigames and complete small challenges to unlock the Chozo artifacts to conplete a simplified version of the MP campaign. A really cool idea.
However, the actual pinball tables are extremely limited. You have Talon Overworld, Space Pirate Frigate, Phendrana Drifts, Phazon Mines, the Artifact Temple, and Impact crater. Sounds like a lot right? The problem is that all of those besides Talon and Space Pirate Frigate are “boss levels” which each have a single gimmick to play with. On top of that, the Space Pirate level is horrible. Talon is the only one that is consistently fun.
I had a lot of fun taking this back out, but once I was able to beat the campaign, I found it boring to go back through. I was also disappointed there was no Chozo Temple level. Small team making this, so not a huge deal but not something I want to keep going back to.
One of the strangest ports the world has ever seen, Metroid Prime Pinball is a retelling of Metroid Prime through the timeless medium of pinball tables. Metroid Prime had a surprisingly hardy storyline to it for a First-Person Blow-'Em-Up sorta game, and MPP sends you through it all in your quest to defeat the dread Metroid Prime and save humanity or whatever. You fight the bosses, you collect the artifacts, you kick all the space jellyfish ass they throw your way.
If that bizarre and remarkably thorough effort wasn't enough, the multitude of tables they have you play across are really, really solid. I love actual pinball machines, but the combination of hyper-dense, extremely fun tables and Samus' ability to lay bombs and occasionally cheat the machine leaves me feeling kind of disappointed with the real deal now. I believe this Nintendo DS launch title has clocked more hours than any other game in my collection. Go get it.
