Because of this ability, the people of the village she grew up in banished her to the nearby mountain shrine after her father’s death, calling her a demon. Whenever she would see black threads, which represent negative emotions, she would warn people, but the villagers took this to mean she was the cause, as those with black threads sometimes died. At the start of the game, two members of the Oniwaban arrive to bring her to Edo at the request of the Shogun, who wants her to use her ability to help them with a mysterious task. Before leaving, the villagers are all upset to see her passing through. Black threads start appearing around their necks, and converge into a massive monster (blightfall), which the two strangers defeat…

This game’s worldbuilding is somewhat-loosely based on the concept of tsukumogami, though not by name. For those unfamiliar, in Japanese folklore, this is when a tool/object gains a spirit when it reaches 100 years old. There are conflicting views on the etymology and modern usage of the term, among other things, but the idea is the basis for a major aspect of the game.
In Winter's Wish, tools that are beloved by their humans can potentially turn into Formfolk and take on a human form. If a tool does this, they procure a little wooden tablet, which they give to their owner to engrave a name into. This solidifies the process and they keep the form; otherwise, they’ll fade away and remain a tool. They can’t die unless their tool is destroyed, and they have rapid healing abilities. They can change their form at will, have feelings, can get married, etc.

The LIs (love interests) in this game are all Vessels, which are somewhere in between human and Formfolk. Vessels are created through a specific ritual developed by a secretive clan who figured out how to effectively fight blightfall. A beloved object is given a human form, like the Formfolk, but their memories and emotions are sealed away--they do not remember their life as a tool, and they are unable to feel emotions. If they were to regain either, they would be at risk of a blightfall manipulating them, and are returned to their tool form, never to be given a Vessel form ever again. They can be fatally wounded, unlike Formfolk, and will also die if their tool is destroyed, like Formfolk. Both Vessels and Formfolk have perfect memories (not counting the sealed ones for Vessels), so Vessels are especially good at the detail-oriented parts of their jobs.
❄️ Route Play Order: Tojo Kunitaka → Kuga Genjuro → Kinji → Yoichi → Takamura Tomonari → Ohtaro
❄️ Route Enjoyment: Tomonari/Ohtaro → Yoichi/Genjuro → Kinji → Kunitaka
(LI order would be more like Tomonari → Yoichi/Genjuro → Kunitaka → Ohtaro/Kinji)
❄️ The Routes/How I Ranked Them: ❄️
The LIs are paired up and work in three different districts within Edo: Kunitaka and Tomonari in Samurai Town, Genjuro and Yoichi in Castle Town, and Kinji and Ohtaro in the Entertainment District. At the end of the first chapter, you pick which of the three areas you want to work in, and the next couple of chapters determine which of the two routes/LIs for said area you’ll get. Because of this, the routes for the pairs are intertwined for a bit before branching off in Chapter Four to the specific LI’s route. That being said, like with many VNs, one character’s route and/or the “true” route (generally depicted on the game cover/title screen where one LI is clearly featured more prominently) is often locked behind completing others’ first. You can’t start Tomonari’s without completing at least one route in each area, and you must complete his affection ending before Ohtaro is unlocked.

Each route is Prologue → Chapter 1 (going around talking to each LI before choosing district to work in) → Chapter 2-3 Common Route for that District → Chapter 4-7 and Final Chapter for each LI
Everyone has an Affection ending, Sorrow ending, and a Bad ending, with Tomonari and Ohtaro having an extra bad ending or two.
❄️Tojo: ❄️
Samurai Town
Original tool –
The initial plot for this route depicts a young monk gathering a following of ronin to potentially storm the Shogun’s castle. He is convinced that he’s Tokugawa’s illegitimate son, and he is somehow able to call and control a blightfall. Suzuno, Tomonari, and Tojo infiltrate the group to get more information. Once that’s somewhat resolved, we dive into Tojo’s specific route, where blightfall are appearing (and disappearing, seemingly under someone’s control) throughout Samurai Town, destroying homes and causing families to go into hiding or leave. Kids are also going missing, and as Tojo runs a small temple school for the kids of the samurai families, he is under suspicion.
I think Tojo makes for a solid starting route. He’s got the “big brother” vibe with both Suzuno and some of the other Oniwaban--always looking out for them, being attentive and willing to both teach and listen, and overall being a dependable guy. It’s mentioned pretty early on in the game, before you pick one of the districts, that the Vessels mimic emotions in order to live amongst humans. They can’t have emotions, but people would notice if they were just apathetic to everything all the time, so they’re generally good about reading people and responding as they would be expected to. At the same time, this is interpreted differently by the Vessels. Yoichi, for instance, just acts annoyed all the time so that he can be left alone and get his work done. Others are more patient and warm, like Tojo, especially when it comes to working with the children at his school.
That being said, his route is just kind of boring. Suzuno doesn’t really do much, doesn’t learn how to fight or improve her abilities, etc. The route is the most focused on what could happen to a Vessel who gets his emotions and/or memories back, though.
❄️ Kuga Genjuro: ❄️
Castle Town
Original tool –
I really liked Kuga himself. He’s sincere and genuine in a way that even the other Vessels aren’t. One of the other LIs even refers to him as the “most Vessel-like,” but I think Kyoshiro (the captain, and not an LI) has that honor. Kuga is all about efficiency like the other LIs, but he balances out because he’s just so determined to be good to the people of Edo.
The shared part of this route starts off with an interesting case for the trio to investigate. While walking alone in the evenings, women are being attacked and having their hair cut off. There is a yokai that is known for this–Kamikiri–but the trio suspects there might be more going on here than it appears.
An interesting thought that Suzuno has at this point is that Yoichi and Kuga are focused on the case in a detached way because of their lack of emotions. Even while talking to one of the victims, she notes that they don’t really seem to care about how scared and upset she was, or else they don’t really think to consider that aspect of it when Suzuno is telling them about all of the black and blue (fear) emotional imprint Threads left all over the crime scene. While she was feeling bad for the victim having her hair cut and being so afraid that she’s getting sick, the guys don’t draw any correlation between the victim’s feelings and the investigation.
The great part about the shared route, and this individual one, is that Suzuno actually DOES something. In Tojo’s route, she kept feeling inadequate and they’re like, “It’s fine, just look at Threads for us,” but in this one she wants to
Kuga’s route has a solid plot, with a nice revenge story, so I found it overall enjoyable between his personality and the story elements. He and Yoichi are also just a great combination.
❄️ Kinji: ❄️
Entertainment District
Original tool:
Kinji just isn’t one of my favorites. The storyline for this route is pretty unique, as Suzuno ends up going undercover in a brothel as a kamuro (trainee, typically younger girls, but she has no experience so they don’t make her a shinzo). It doesn’t really get dicey or anything since she isn’t expected to interact with customers at all.
Kinji himself is a kabuki actor, specifically an onnagata (plays female roles). His personality just isn’t great. He’s one of the more strict ones when it comes to just being efficient and doing his job, which is fine and makes more sense than those who are more expressive, but he’s also the type who tends to tease Suzuno and others, and it comes across pretty malicious even if he doesn’t have those feelings/intentions. I dunno, his route was interesting, but he’s not my fav.
❄️ Yoichi: ❄️
Castle Town
Original tool:
Yoichi is the one put in charge of training Suzuno when she requests it in the common route for the Castle Town team. His cover job is at a brewery, where he’s basically the manager and in charge of all of the shop servants. He’s great at what he does, but he’s also a big foodie and everyone calls him lazy because he’s always eating or resting somewhere around town (though his work is always done). He’s definitely the most abrasive when you first start the game, as his interpretation of expressing emotions (as the general public does not know about Vessels or the secret part of the Oniwaban) is to act annoyed by people in order to get them to leave him alone so he can work.
The story for this route is actually not one of my favorites, but it balances my appreciation of the character with an enjoyable enough plot that it’s a solid middle ground.
The one thing about this route that was frustrating was that Suzuno never sees his emotional Threads, even when you’re in basically the epilogue of their story and they’re clearly in love and he’s expressing legit emotions. It was just a weird choice for them to point out that she didn’t see them yet. There IS an earlier plot point where it’s discussed that Vessels HAVE hearts, they’re just sealed away, which is different from not having one at all. Obviously. But that doesn’t really translate into her not seeing the Threads as if he’s expressing real emotions with a sealed heart. It just wasn’t done well.
❄️Tomonari: ❄️
Samurai Town
Original tool -
Tomonari’s route is what I would consider the True Route, even if it’s not the last one to unlock. As mentioned before, you have to play Tojo’s, Genjuro’s OR Yoichi’s, and Kinji’s routes to unlock him, but I would highly recommend just doing all four of those before this one. Tomonari is definitely my favorite LI. Disregarding my weakness for white/silver-haired characters, he’s just really well-rounded. He doesn’t understand why he’s drawn to be extra protective of Suzuno, but he just goes with it. He’s got a very soothing presence, is soft-spoken and direct, and is just a genuinely pleasant character. He’s the most recently-born Vessel on the team, having been “created” about a year prior to the start of the game, so while he is intelligent and a very capable fighter, he’s also still kind of finding his place within the group. He’s the first LI you meet, when he goes with Tojo to pick Suzuno up during the prologue.
The previous routes are all mostly self-contained stories. We get the bare minimum in Suzuno’s backstory, but a lot more of it is revealed in Tomonari’s route. It’s still not the fullest picture, but that alone means the route has more depth to it than four of the others. There is actually a chunk of this route that made me mad because of the direction it went, but it served a purpose.

❄️ Ohtaro: ❄️
Entertainment District
**Original tool –
Ohtaro’s route is unlocked only after you’ve completed Tomonari’s Affection ending. Ohtaro himself is the golden retriever boyfriend of the group: happy-go-lucky, excitable, big personality. This is all explained away as him being one of the Vessels who’s been around the longest of the current crew, so he’s really gotten comfortable being around people and expressing “emotion.”
There are definitely little hints in the other routes that had me suspicious about how this one would go. Saying much else about this route would be super spoilery, so I’ll leave it at that.
Otherwise, while Ohtaro is a fun enough character (I tend to prefer the serious-yet-kind types, don’t like the players, and am mostly neutral about the Ohtaro-like LIs), my feelings on the route are mixed. It is the most lore-heavy, finally answering a ton of questions that come up as you play the other routes. We are given Suzuno’s full backstory, and many of the characters that were only part of other LIs’ route plots make an appearance in this one, as if those events are also happening in this route, to an extent. It brings everything together. That being said, the actual romance part, and Suzuno’s actions throughout the route, were really annoying and frustrating, so while I appreciated the “fullness” of the plot here, I was pretty unhappy with Suzuno’s character and how many things were handled.
❄️ Little things that I enjoyed: ❄️
-The LIs will say Suzuno’s name if you don’t change it (which I never do in VNs). This is a more recent trend change in otoge specifically and I’m happy about it. I don’t self-insert at all with games/books so I prefer that this reads as a first-person romance, and that the FMC has an actual personality. Bustafellows is still the only one I can recall playing where the MC is voiced, though.
-There are a lot of great female supporting characters. I think I tend to be much more critical of female characters in media as a woman myself, which is more about the tendency to portray us in specific (negative) ways. For whatever reason, otoge always seem to have really great female characters, like, overwhelmingly so. Miharu is Suzuno’s childhood Formfolk who wasn’t allowed to stay in her village, and she’s a huge source of love and support throughout the game. Chie is a samurai’s wife who is mostly in the Tojo/Tomonari routes, and is really kind to Suzuno while hosting a tea ceremony. The other attendees, just unnamed samurai wives, are also super sweet. Okuni--named for the real Izumo no Okuni--is mostly in Kinji’s route, as the highest ranking oiran who is put in charge of Suzuno’s training. It’s spoilers to go too much into it, but she’s very patient and caring, and looks out for all of the girls. The other trainees, mostly unnamed, are kind to Suzuno despite her position, and they get along during the brief poetry/etiquette lesson scenes. Even Sato, in Yoichi’s route, who initially seems like she’s going to be an asshole because of her feelings for Yoichi, quickly redeems herself and becomes a friend. Like, I was just so happy with all of these “girl’s girl” characters. In between the “ooooohs” over the LIs, I was constantly going, “Omg, I love her, she’s the best!”
Mimiiiii
-I’ve loved learning about the Shinsengumi and Oniwaban since watching Rurouni Kenshin as a kid, so I have a great time with stuff like this from that interest alone. The fact that the LIs in this are Oniwaban isn’t reeeeally all that important, though. They could have called them anything, really, as irrelevant as it ended up being historically. I mean, the framework is there, but it’s not like Hakuoki where there are real events and whatnot, anyway.
-The captains. The head of the covert Oniwaban is a Vessel named Kyoshiro, and he's the captain in charge of Samurai Town. The captain for Castle Town is Miyaji and the one for the Entertainment District is Kiyohiko. Miyaji and Kiyohiko are actually human, so they aren't usually as involved with the day-to-day blightfall battles, as they could be manipulated due to having emotions. I looooathed Kiyohiko in Tojo's route, because he was worse than even the Vessels in his thoughts about a Vessel getting their emotions back and just seeing them as disposable tools. He's MUCH better in the other routes, especially Kinji's/Ohtaro's because he's their direct captain and you learn more about him. Miyaji is married and has a little girl and he loves to start every morning gushing about them, haha.
Kyoshiro, Miyaji, Kiyohiko
-Kyoshiro x Miharu (Mimi). This isn't really an in-game side romance or anything, but they're great foils to one another in several scenes, especially in the Samurai Town routes. It's a bit more involved in Tomonari's route, but I wish it was something that could have been explored further. Kyoshiro is very much the most Vessel-like of them all, and this angers Mimi (who doesn't know about Vessels for most of the routes), so they butt heads a lot. Or, at least, she rages at him for being indifferent/cold about various topics.
❄️ Overall Thoughts: ❄️
This one is actually pretty short to mid-length. The premise of the game is fantastic, but wasn’t given the depth it deserved. I don’t think enough time was spent on character development, the actual relationships, or repercussions of Vessels potentially unlocking their memories and/or hearts. Because of this, I’m somewhere in the camp of “if they had made the routes longer, they could have done a better job at this, but what if they made them longer and it was just more of the same and they didn’t develop those things and I spent another 20 hours with this game and not getting more out of it?” Each route was essentially Suzuno falling for the guy while working more directly with him, and then a major event causing a seal to break, with very little discussion or fanfare around it in the end. Tojo’s is the only one that actually explored this to any mentionable extent.
The art is stunning, specifically the outfits, and the music is solid. There’s one track that I really need to look into, because, even though it’s been years and I never finished it on Vita, I could swear it’s the same as a song in Norn9: Var Commons.
I don’t feel like I wasted my time on this one, but I do feel like a lot of its potential was wasted and not explored as much as it could have been.
They can’t all be Hakuoki and Code: Realize.
