Simply a good Tower Defense game

Playtime: 16 hours (completed every level on advanced difficulty)

Played: 2025

Expectation: Maybe not as amazing as DQ1 but definitely close.

Intro

Like the first game DQ2 is a standard Tower Defense game. Enemies spawn in 1+ spots and move to 1+ spots. You place objects (characters in DQ) that automatically attack them in between the spots. It's the sequal to DQ1, which stood out from most games in the genre because of its story and refined gameplay.

The Good

  • Lots of maps.
  • A bunch of new kinds of towers and attacks.
  • Core gameplay is still good.
  • Weird, colourful style.
  • Accessibility options are again on point.
  • Has an anti-grinding option.

The Bad

  • The story is a bit of a mess. Too many characters and weird motivations.
  • Antagonist is basically absent until the end.
  • Balance feels off. A few maps are too easy or too hard when first encountered.
  • Lacks the unique items that gave DQ1 a lot of flavour.

Conclusion

DQ2 is a good Tower Defense game. It would not make my top 10, but it'd probably be #11 (out of 73 TD games). It's not as amazing as the first game, sure, but very few games in the genre …

7,5 years after i backed this Defender's Quest 2 is finally here! 2025 looks to be an awesome year for gaming!

As a patient gamer i rarely care about new releases, let alone upcoming ones. But i'm thrilled that this is actually happening. I backed this in 2017 and it honestly seemed like it was never going to be done, but six years later it's finally coming - the sequel to the best Tower Defense game of all time!

There's a Steam demo if you want to try it. So far it looks pretty great, i especially like how there's new and much weirder setting.
