Yeah I kind of love this game. It’s smack dab up my alley, borrowing mostly every great mechanic from 00’s survival horror, but with a modern indie wacky twist. It reminds me a bit of Dead Beacon (possibly my favorite survival horror) mixed with My Friendly Neighborhood.

It is a first person survival horror with limited saves, limited inventory, tons of exploration and backtracking all wrapped around a bizarre body horror comedy story. My favorite element was the exploration as the level design is quite open, there is tons of optional stuff to discover and you will do a ton of backtracking while juggling multiple objectives. I have been very vocal with criticism for many modern indie survival horror games that are just a straight line with no overlapping goals or open exploration - that is not the case here.

The only thing that deviates from the formula is the combat. It is melee-only, so ammo conservation is not a thought here. Personally I ended up just learning the timing so I could systematically take down every enemy, and the game seems to encourage you to do that at least most of the time. I still died a ton though, so the threat is real (as is losing progress due to the limited saves), so this difference did not detract from the survival horror feel for me.

Overall a wacky but surprisingly faithful new survival horror game that I hope more people will discover. It’s easily in my top 3 of the year so far (not that it’s been a tough competition).

8.7/10
