Faithful but Forgettable 90s Survival Horror

Hades Z.E.R.O. is a classic PSX survival horror game that is very authentic and faithful to its roots. It is pretty short at about 4 hours of playtime, and not the most memorable game in the genre. It definitely checks all of the boxes - limited inventory, tank controls, fixed cameras, aggressive enemies, puzzles, etc. But I don't think it does much to stand out or be inventive.

My biggest complaint is in the visuals. The game is extremely dark, at times comically so. It is also very monochromatic and sparse, with very little set dressing. The environment rarely changes and 75% of the rooms are just linear grey halls.

Exploration is decent, puzzles are a mixed bag, and combat is very faithful in its finicky difficulty and quirks. The lore documents are pretty generic biblical gibberish that I tended to not read, and the overall plot just completely went over my head. It basically feels like a serviceable game, but not one I would recommend over the true classics or the modern gems (Alisa, Crow Country, Signalis, Tormented Souls, etc)
