As we first take control of the two characters – I play as Karla – we look around this strange, grassy new world. It’s all beautifully animated using stop-motion, and unlike similar-looking games where the style is achieved digitally, Oettinger says every texture in Out of Words is crafted by hand. “The grass you see is paper cut out,” he says, pointing at the screen. “[The] little cliffs are books cut up.”
“These cutscene animations are made from some of the most talented stop-motion animators,” Oettinger tells me later. “[They’ve] done, you know, Wes Anderson films, Tim Burton films, Laika. The guy who animated most of that scene is the animator of Kubo [and the Two Strings].”
