Article: Trains Deserve Kickflips, Too by Kyle Hilliard

Anime is a clear inspiration for the game’s aesthetic. “The game pulls inspiration from a lot of things we love. From some of our favorite anime (Dragon Ball, One Piece, Jojo, Air Gear, Initial D) to some beloved games (Jet Set Radio, Tony Hawk, Crazy Taxi, Olli Olli World) and, of course, Japanese pop (and train) culture,” Jaumandreu writes.

Denshattack has an undeniably bizarre premise, but the action looks smooth and rhythmic. I always love a game that lands on an unexpected idea and chases it with little regard for its marketability. “When we started working on Denshattack!, we had a concept that made perfect sense to us, even if we weren’t sure whether publishers or players would find it weird or a little silly,” Jaumandreu writes. “We feel really lucky that it has been well-received so far. Standing out can come from many places; in our case, the surprising concept probably helped get the ball rolling, but sometimes you create something unique and it just doesn’t find its audience.”

This one's about driving a train, getting huge air, and chaining together sick kickflips like Tony Hawk. Even with the silly concept it manages to be stylish as heck, with a funky soundtrack and a bright, bold look. The trick mechanics seem totally solid as well, with a fun drifting aspect added on top of the usual nollies and manuals.

Unfortunately, having to nail Street Fighter-y fireball motions on the right analog to input your tricks kills the game stone dead for me, it's just not something I've ever enjoyed doing. If that doesn't bother you though, this demo seems really promising!
