God of War: Chain of Memories

God of War: Sons of Sparta is one of those games that sounds good on paper, but the actual execution of everything leaves a lot to be desired.

Watching Kratos and Deimos' childhood unfold through a fresh lens, and istening to Young Kratos' thoughts and perceptions of the Gods of Olympus was entertaining. It really revealed how much Kratos' personality and ideologies have shifted over the course of the series. And honestly... that was the best part of the game.

Otherwise, unless you're a BIG fan of the God of War franchise, I find it hard to fully recommend since there are so many better Metroidvania games out there.

I would say that the game itself isnt a bad Metroidvania by all means - it's just that there are other games (i.e. Hollow Knight, Animal Well, Guacamelee 2, etc.) that tackle the formula so much better.

Also... wish Deimos was more involved gameplay wise. Just saying... if this game was actually coop, would have been sick :)

Finished my first (and last lol) playthrough of God of War: Sons of Sparta, and planning on cleaning up the rest of the trophies before writing my full review. But initial thoughts as these credits roll... for me the game overall was... okay.

Definitely falls more along the lines of - "The journey is more important than the destination", i.e. I understand what they were going for with the ending, but felt it didnt quite land.

It was cool seeing Kratos' outlook of the gods when he was a kid, and seeing his interactions with his brother Deimos, and his daughter Caliope but that's about it xD.

I'll share more once I fully 100% this game and really take more time to gather my thoughts. For now, I should probably sneak back into bed before my partner wakes up - I can hear the birds chirping outside 😭

Playing through this game REALLY makes me respect double jumping as a game mechanic soooo much. 😭

PSA to anyone playing God of War Sons of Sparta. Dont forget to return home once in a while and visit the blacksmith. He has a lot of strong equipment to make for you that makea the game much easier :)

It's adorable to think Papa Kratos is re-telling the story of him and his little bro to his daughter Caliope 😊

My second Platinum of 2026 is another game that wasn't great, but it was engaging enough to keep me grinding until the final trophy popped up.

The things I do for Sparta

I wanted to like God of War Sons of Sparta more than I did, but I did enjoyed it. Is a perfectly fine metroidvania with some good exploration, a lot of secrets to find and pretty pixel art backgrounds... but it does nothing great or special. Also, the combat is clunky and is full of bugs.

The thing I really liked is the story. The plot is bad and needs cohesion, but it allows to really explore the relation of Kratos with his brother Deimos and the way Sparta twisted his vision of the world. That's good stuff
