Vallejo's review of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell

I don't really know why, but I can remember with uncanny precision the first time I played this game. At the time it was the first stealth game I had played and it blew my teenage goddamned mind. It was so, so cool. The feeling those missions gave were almost cinematic. You felt the tension and the excitment, it was absolutely unlike anything else.

I have never played any Metal Gear (planning to solve that soon, with the remaster incoming) so for me this is the benchmark for tactical espionage games. This alongside Tenchu cimented my undying love for this genre and to this day I still crave for the feeling those games gave me.

Splinter Cell shows all of its twenty years in what it says and how it says it. Even though you can clearly see a slightly satiric intent, it's the kind of blatant pro-USA, pro-army, pro-government, pro[the rest of the world is split between countries that suck and countries that need to be saved by USA] propaganda that, combined with my disinterest for the military setting, always kept me away from Tom Clancy and/or Call of Duty games. But you can also see its age in it being a western action game from a time when western developers were still trying to fill the gap that separated them from the japanese ones: it's imprecise, clunky, styilistically bland. Also, you can see its age in the woman seductively moving while pulling up her pants every time she talks to you. That being said, when its focused on the important stuff it can still be a good game, that gives you lots of freedom in specific situations, many gadgets and many ways to use them, and can be quite fun with its adventure-like elements. I can understand though why Splinter Cell fans and Metal Gear Solid fans were often very divided: they are very different games, only superficially similar. But I had fun.

Still fantastic today!
This review is for the Xbox version

An Xbox classic from 2002. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell plays like a realistic version of Metal Gear Solid. At the time of release, it was the most graphically advanced video game on console. Featuring stunning lighting and shadow effects, "Splinter Cell" was the first true showcase of the Xbox's graphical power. Visually, it still holds up exceptionally well in 2023. The stealth gameplay is equally impressive.

While it might be too slow for some, the game arguably surpasses MGS and Hitman in stealth tactics. As NSA field operative Sam Fisher, players can utilize numerous abilities, weapons and gadgets. While there may be too many trial-and-error segments, this is one of the best action titles from the early 2000's.

I remember when I first played Splinter Cell and I found a lot of the mechanics awesome and new. I enjoyed it now as well as 20 years ago. The game is not perfect (I played the Steam version), it has quite a lot of bugs, sometimes it's kind of weird to be breathing near a guard and they will not detect you if the light meter is low, but apart from these issues for me it was a catchy game and I enjoyed finishing it.

A few disclaimers. I played the vanilla version on Ubisoft Connect. I learned recently that without mods, the game doesn't render and function properly on newer hardware, so I didn't get the authentic experience. For context, lighting was completely busted, which is a core part of the game's stealth mechanics. I also save scummed and used walkthroughs. With that disclaimer out of the way, I can go ahead and say the game is okay. Starting with Chaos Theory then going back to the first game had me missing mechanics that CT had like a sound meter, improved jammer, and sight option that shows tech that can be interfered with. This game seemed pretty harsh too. From game over from 3 alarms, dog enemies, enemies that were literally unapproachable, and how picky the game was with the conditions to grab enemies from behind. It was still neat to experience to see where the series started, but I don't think I'd come back to this game, not without mods or emulating a console version at least.

Found comments I made years ago (when I initially started the save I used to beat the game) and I think they still reflect my current feelings: Enjoying it so far, but I feel like the level design is cheap. There’s been a few instances where I can’t figure out how I’m supposed to progress without getting caught, but it’s probably just me not being able to figure out the game.

Wish there was a sound meter like in Chaos Theory. Seems like enemies have eyes on the back of their head because they see me even when I'm walking slowly behind them. Shooting is awful. It's understandable because it discourages killing everything, but then they force you to shoot to progress and it just sucks. Sometimes it's just not clear what you're supposed to do.

A great mix of stealth and fighting.

Easily one of the best games I have ever played. The pace was perfect. The story was great, and most importantly the length was perfect. A great mix of stealth and fighting. Basically a modern thief game.

VWEEEEEEEEE
This review is for the Xbox version

Comparing Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid 2, both massively hyped stealth-action games that came out at the beginning of the 6th generation, It's very apparent why Japanese video games were thriving at this point. Both games had issues for sure, but what Splinter Cell lacked most was an artistic flare and a distinct point of view. Splinter Cell, while technically a superior STEALTH game, is militaristic and clinical where Metal Gear was cinematic and frankly, anime as hell. It felt like warring ideologies in game design at the time. Now both series are apparently dead. Bummer.

The best stealth franchise in gaming

Splinter Cell offers the best stealth gameplay around - you can snap necks, you can us your environment for drop kills, you've got gadgets, silenced pistols... it all just feels very balanced. Sam IS armed but so squishy that going the loud route will likely lead to your death. The first game has aged very well and is actually one of the better games in the series. I remember the xbox shadow and lighting graphics being revolutionary at the time and that is the version I'd recommend (the PS2 and GC versions are not as pretty). Full playthrough below:

This game can be frustrating and good at the same time

6.5/10 for 2002 this game have really good graphics and lightning, music is good, it really describes the ambient, shooting not good, a pistol is so imprecise and a gun sometimes too, but i know this game is more focused on stealth, and stealth is good in this game, but AI in this game is really annoying, sometimes they can detect u even if u didnt make any noise or a possible way to see u, and that can really go on your nerves and its the main reason i am giving this game 6.5/10. Story is good. It is worth playing if u want to play all splinter cell games, but will i ever replay this? No.

It's no Chaos Theory

(2,5 stars)

I really liked Chaos Theory when i played it in checks 2012 (!). I loved how you used the mouse wheel to determine how fast you move, the stealth action was good and it had fun gadgets. But it's quite a leap between playing a game that came out 7 years earlier and one that came out 18 years earlier. Splinter Cell does hold up reasonably well in terms of mechanics, despite the crummy inventory system. But the level design... oof.

I got stuck right away in the first level because i didn't recognise a trap door on a roof, lol. Later on i couldn't find the dead drop in a square. Turns out there was a little tunnel in the corner with a laptop, ammo and medkits. It makes literally no sense. There isn't even a hatch or anything. That's when i realised this just didn't do it for me.

After playing Chaos Theory for the second or third time and completely falling in love with this franchise, I opted to go back to the beginning. I knew it would be a downgrade in graphics and mechanics, that just how games often work!, but I got stuck in a hallway/security system/autosave loop situation on one level that I could not escape from and couldn't bring myself to restart that level and decided I was good on getting the Splinter Cell I experience. It's Sam Fisher. He likes darkness.

I feel like being sneaky. I'm going to be working my way through all the Splinter Cell games I have. This first one has some janky controls and the A.I is crazily inconsistent, but it's still loads of fun. Wow, I miss Michael Ironside. FYI...he's not dead. He just doesn't do the voice of Sam anymore

So this is officially my favourite game. I obsess over this stealth stuff more than I do about anything else, trying the same sequence fifty times if I have to, just so I can sneak past a guard whom I could have taken out in three seconds. And I've had to force-uninstall the game halfway through. It was the only way I could keep myself from playing non-stop.

Hmm, I find that somehow, playing an NSA secret agent is no longer quite the innocent pastime it once was. ;-) Gameplay-wise, however, the game is still awesome fun. After the countless hours I've already spent on this game, you'd think I'd seen it all before and done it all to death, but I still find new ways of solving each level.

  • Tradecraft is something you don't forget. It's like riding a bike.
  • Or wearing high heels.

That may well be, but I've certainly forgotten the finer mechanics of this game since my last playthrough in 2009. Twenty noob deaths later, my hopes of doing a full-stealth speedrun blindfolded have taken a beating. :-D
