They say it's hard to find a place to call your own, but what if such a place was not uniquely yours? What if both of you were not willing to give it up? Big Dipper is a visual novel which tells a romantic story of the circumstances that brought two lovers together one fateful New Year's Eve.
Visual novels are something I have a hard time to find interest to pick up on but I must acknowledge that there is something that leaves an impression from every playthrough, unlike games of other genres. Despite this complicated relationship, Big Dipper has a thematic quality about its plot. A majority of it is in the veins of slice-of-life, considering that most of story shows the development and interaction between two main characters meeting each other in a forest house at New Years Eve (convenient for this review post date). Following their conversations about their family and the complicated upbringing, I could resonate with the psychology theme the game touches on.
The downside with the plot focusing on a single day time period is that the character development gets rather rushed and too convenient for a natural unfolding. Another thing is that the supernatural event in the story climax feels out of place, as this visual novel has spent its major length building the plot on a down-to-earth premise.
To summarize, with authentic subject theme and relatable characters, I still think that it's worth a 2 hour read on a holiday season, if you'd like bits of fairy tales sprinkled in.
