ABOUT THIS GAME

Caper in the Castro is a point-and-click adventure game developed by the nonbinary C.M. Ralph in 1989 for the Macintosh. In this game, you play as Tracker McDyke, a lesbian detective, on a quest to find the missing drag queen Tessy LaFemme.

PERSONAL CONNECTION

While I wrote a paper about "Queer Representation in Media History" for my studies, I had to play and research Caper in the Castro because it is the first queer game in video game history. As a gamer but also as a pansexual, it felt important to experience a piece of gaming history.

MY REVIEW

I was surprised by how fun this 35-year-old game still is. I expected outdated mechanics and clunky quality-of-life features, but I never found myself complaining about anything. Instead, I enjoyed how fun the dialogue was and how engaging it was discovering the variety of bad endings.

Thank you for reading my review and enjoy life. โค๏ธ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’œ

Preliminary: Wow what a story behind this. And a context. "Charityware"--neat. I don't love Mac adventure games, despite their neat Look they mostly feel trudging, but with this context and access to Hints, I might push through this one! "It's not just a game... it's a gayme!"

I love the "fast travel" with the Map item. And tho the designs are quite basic for a Mac adventure game, I love the noir vibe. And I love that I'm just shooting so many things lol, including a toilet.

Wow that was brief lol. I didn't have to look to the Hints except to deal with a parser frustration/misspelling (either shakles or chains works for freeing Tessy when you find her) and to think to shoot the toilet, sorry but that didn't come to mind haha

The fact I went back into the game to explore areas I didn't have to/didn't get to says a lot. However, a lot of the language I came upon, especially about women and lesbians, wasn't what I was hoping for (the creator has acknowledged this). Also a lot of what I came upon was limited "further examination revealed nothing" etc..That being said, it was still fun to wander around the relatively small map for an adventure game, and the Red Herring idea was cute (tho of course quite obvious, as was much of the game, dare I say too simple? But a nice idea for a charityware game) enter image description here

Look: 8/10 Boosted just for showing LGBT couples and the hard work that goes in to making these old Mac graphics.

Sound: - As far as I can tell there is none essentially? I even made sure the Mac's Sound was โ€ฆ

Look: 8/10 Boosted just for showing LGBT couples and the hard work that goes in to making these old Mac graphics.

Sound: - As far as I can tell there is none essentially? I even made sure the Mac's Sound was turned up etc. (and heard the terrible Apple II beep sound again after a long time away haha)

Play: 7.5/10 Can't deny I love simple, also love a murder mystery. But the simplicity doe leave a lot to be desired. Plus, the parser and dialog are lacking, sometimes outright bad/offensive. However, there was some funny "dialog" in the game speaking to you/reacting to you, which boosted this from a 7.

Feel: 8.5/10 Very early (if not the first?) LGBT-focused videogame. Didn't take profit and instead went toward fighting the AIDS epidemic? Nice and nice.

Attachment: 8.5/10 A rare game where, if it weren't for the concept and context, it likely would just be a 3, another run-of-the-mill adventure/murder mystery that I was able to figure out so I liked more than the overly complex ones. But with this concept and context, and the fact I returned to it after beating it, and explored what else there was to explore, I feel no qualms seeing it more highly rated than it "technically" is. Plus, even if I wont regularly replay it, nor were the Look or Play particularly great, etc., I will likely tell my brothers about it, remember it, etc. which is a form of Attachment.

Overall: 8.1/10

Completion: Main Story + Extras (as far as I found. The safe, the car, the alley/garbages etc)

Playtime: ~20 mins
