The game starts off strong with impressive visuals and solid voice acting. Unfortunately, the longer you play, the more its flaws become apparent. The experience quickly turns shallow and repetitive—you end up fighting the same boss six times within the first four hours.

Progression feels frustratingly padded. Instead of earning items directly, you’re given schematics that require constant material grinding. Even when you have the materials, you might be blocked by a low vendor level, forcing you to craft items you don’t need just to progress. Exploration is equally unrewarding—finding a chest often means being stopped by a lock you can’t open without tracking down or buying a lockpick, making the process tedious.

Movement upgrades are poorly paced. You don’t unlock double jump until nearly 20 hours in, and the glide mechanic comes just before the endgame, leaving little incentive to revisit earlier areas. Platforming is clunky and punishing, with fall damage that often kills you for missing a jump—a baffling design choice.

Combat is just as repetitive: roll, strike, roll, strike, wait for stamina, repeat dozens of times. Bosses are simplistic, with only a handful of moves that are easy to dodge. To compensate, the developers throw in waves of minions, which makes fights feel more annoying than challenging.

At its core, the game has potential, but it’s buried under poor design decisions, shallow mechanics, and unnecessary grind. With significant updates, it could become something worthwhile, but in its current state, it falls far short.

I'm a big fan of souls-like genre and also games like Hollow Knight and Ori, and this game is exactly what I imagined 2D souls-like metroidvania would be. Amazing graphics and soundtrack, interesting talent tree and skills, good combat, interesting bosses and locations.

It has some shortcomings, which didn't spoil my enjoyment of the game, but I see a lot of people complain about them, so I'll mention some of them here:

Fall damage: yes, the game has a pretty big fall damage and you will probably die a few dozens of times just from it. After finishing the game, I have 25 deaths from falling (out of 70 total deaths). Apparently other people die from falling more often.

Boss runbacks: a lot of people complain about this, especially about the final boss, which takes HUGE... 40 seconds to run to from the checkpoint. Well, I would definitely prefer a checkpoint right near the boss area, but 40 seconds is not that big of a deal. I've seen much longer runbacks in Dark Souls and other souls-likes. And you usually need much less time to get to other bosses in this game.

Some bosses are repeated: yes, but most of the bosses are unique, and really interesting to fight. Repeated bosses are just mini-bosses and they are not repeated that often.

Need to grind to fully upgrade merchants: this is completely optional. You can just upgrade them by giving them blueprints you find in the world, and this will be enough to unlock about half of what they offer. I think it was designed in a way that you will upgrade the rest in NG+ (which is sadly not available on the game release and apparently will come later).

Entropic levels are bad: …

Entropic levels are bad: with this one I agree. You need to do a lot of platforming and you have limited time. If it runs out, you start from the beginning. Some levels are pretty big and really annoying to explore. And you need to go through them to progress the story (at least some of them). I think they should have been optional.

Overall, I really liked the game. A solid 9/10 for me.

Maybe the quickest way to explain the vibe of Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree is, “what if Castlevania hated your guts?”

I might need to check this out!
