FlatEye is definitely one of those hidden gems that I would love to see succeed because of how interesting it is, but as much as I love it it's not for everyone.
You are impersonating a middle manager in charge of a "gas station" in Island, but in a futuristic world where USA are gone and technology has advanced beyond what we know today. It resonated with me a lot for personal reasons and because of how cynical yet smart the writing is.
Each time you develop a new "module" you also unveil a small personal story of an NPC and those are often charming, sad, funny or even a touch scary, and everytime they make you wonder what would you do in their shoes!!
The first module you unlock is the FlatEye, a mirror that uses AI to advise you on your diet, medical condition, mental state etc .... But then it quickly progress to memory reprograming and VR prison and then a little beyond but i don't want to spoil it.
Even though it's supposed to be happening in 2024 and there's no neons, the story is definitely cyberpunk. The main narrative has you helping a rogue AI to stop humanity from ending itself by studying the clients of your gas station turned medical/entertainment center and corporate hellscape. That's a lot to unpack but it was a great ride for me.
However, the gameplay while it serves the story perfectly is nothing to write home about and you have to be interested in those topics for the game to work. If any of that sounds good to you I highly recommend you get this game from GOG.
