Why does this page look different?
We're in the process of merging Giant Bomb game entries to IGDB entries. This is an older Giant Bomb page. It's safe to use, and all data will eventually be moved to the corresponding IGDB entry.
I had heard of these games before but hadn't played them at the time of their release. After recently completing the remasters, I came away quite impressed. The first game was a solid start to the series and still holds up but it's the second game that really improved a lot of things, particularly the story. It was better at staging the emotional moments, which had more weight and impact. The stories of both games do a good job of showing the consequences of war and the second game in particular had a diverse set of antagonists. One is straight-up evil, whose motivations are simple and obvious in a memorable way while another is morally grey whose reasons for certain decisions wasn't clear at times.
Some improvements to item management helped to make the second game more playable although generally transferring stuff between characters in and out of the party was still tedious and cumbersome. It's not a deal breaker at all but something to be aware of.
These games reminded me of aspects of Sega Genesis/Megadrive 16-bit era RPGs like Phantasy Star IV and Shining Force. But one unique feature of Suikoden is the establishment of a castle HQ that gradually expands as you recruit more characters. This was neat to see. I think I've become a fan of the series.
Second game is great. I appreciate playing the first one now because of the returning characters and how short it was. The experience made me appreciate the gameplay improvements as well. In a different time, I would have done most I could to recruit all 108 characters and complete everything.
Both games part of my chilhood.
Was waiting for remaster for a long time.
Im glad they didnt change a thing, still as i remember it <3
Completed both with true endings ( need to use guide of course lol ) within 1 week.
And there is clear save data? what does this means???? sequeleaaaa??
Enjoying Suikoden II much more than the first game. Want to play more of the rope climbing mini-game. One sure thing I prefer from the first game though is the army battle gameplay because I barely understand how to win with the new setup.
Missed nearly twenty recruits when I finished the first game. Far less than what I thought but not so much that I have regrets with not going through it. Kinda hoping (althought I doubt it) that the second game is as short as this one.
It seems that I'm near the end of the first game. I appreciate how relatively short this is. I didn't recruit all recruitable characters, and I'll probably leave it at that. I think I'll continue directly on to the second game as I'm curious to see the changes.
Kinda refreshing to play a game with a straighforward narrative. Always a fan of having a headquarters that grows with gaining new recruits. Not so sure if remasters of games I haven’t played before are for me though. The liberation army reminds me of Unicorn Overlord, and the army battles remind me of Ni No Kuni II.
Can't continue playing Baldur's Gate 3 in the meantime due to some temporary living room arrangements so I'm switching to this, and I am excited. Haven't played the original and don't know much about the game but it feels right up my alley.
Ugh. What a frustrating experience this has been. Suikoden I seems like it has an excellent story, but I just can't get over how awful the gameplay is. I'm a big JRPG guy, so this isn't just a "turn based combat is lame" take. But my god, how can Konami remaster this game and not address the overbearingly tedious item management system? Awful awful awful. So about 10 hours into my Suikoden I playthrough I am dropping it.
I immediately booted up Suikoden II because it's supposed to have addressed some of these QoL features, and at least on the surface it seems like it has! But I just can't get the awful taste of the first game out of my mouth, and I am pretty sure I am going to bounce off of this game as well.
So so so so disappointing. I would've much rather just watched a Suikoden anime than have tried to play this.
Started playing the first Suikoden and boy does it seem really, really half-baked. I like the plot and characters pretty well but everything else about is subpar at best, even considering the time that it came out. The world is just so lifeless. The combat is stale and uninteresting. Item management is also a giant pain in the ass. It's like they spent a year mapping out the story only to realize the launch date was in three weeks and they hadn't done any actual development on the game. I'll keep going with it but jeez it's lackluster.
Feels pretty wild to see Konami actually doing something with this series. The other day they announced an anime, a gacha game, and even a stage show. Suikoden 2 has always been one of my favorite games, but at this moment in time I don't think I'm really ready to play it again. Not with a $50 price tag, anyway. I think I've played the 2nd game at least 4 times in my life, the last being maybe 8 years ago? I've played the first game a bunch as well. I'd get this in a heartbeat if it were cheaper, but videogame prices are really starting to bite into my finances these days.
This took so long to come out that I completely transitioned into being a person who would rather just go play the originals than a remaster. Money saved
