Gelfling adventure was a basic bitmap graphics/multiple choice first-person adventure, written by game designer Al Lowe. Often cited as a simplified version of the original Dark Crystal computer game intended for a younger audience. It featured many of the same graphics and storyline as the original, but the puzzles and options were more simplified and menu oriented.
This is Sierra’s last graphic adventure before King’s Quest. It’s a simplifed version of the previous The Dark Crystal game, a more linear version with a simpler interface, that makes you choose a verb and a noun from two lists to “create” an action. Given the fact that The Dark Crystal was already easier than other Sierra games, the end result is a very simple game, that nonetheless works well in being a movie tie-in for little kids. I did find interesting though the fact that the interface (a refined version of what already was in Mickey’s Space Adventure) is significantly evolved compared to other contemporary kids games from Sierra, which made you choose between complete phrases. And it’s also probably more innovative than what Sierra realized, considering it’s basically a rougher version of what Lucasfilm Games will create for Labyrinth and will later evolve into the SCUMM system. Which is not nothing. But I guess Sierra thought that this really innovative thing was for kids and adults had to continue typing commands. Figures.
