Well after revisiting the True Fear series, I got a craving for that old Hidden Object Game (HOG) style game. Years ago I had played a ton from the website Big Fish Games, but given the formulaic monotonous nature of the genre- not to mention the fact a new one is released daily to a catalog of 3500+ games - I burnt out on the genre. But I remembered the Maze series being the best of the best, and decided to revisit it.
And ya, it’s clearly one of the best in the genre. Not only is it a horror game, which I’m biased towards, but it’s got really good pacing, variety, and feels like it was made with passion. Many of the games on Big Fish are similar to “AI slop”, mass produced and just shoves the hidden object mini game down your throat. But here it is used tastefully and sparingly, being more of a classic point and click type game than just a sequence of HO mini games.
I had a lot of fun with it, and I’m happy to see the series has a total of 5 entries. I may dabble in some other games in the genre, but I’m for sure going to play all of the Maze games as it is almost on par with the True Fear series in my opinion. If you have any interest in point and click horror, and HOG games specifically, I highly recommend checking this one out. It really stands tall among the rest, and it’s a shame it’s not on Steam.
