This is a faithful and visually enhanced return to the classic survival horror experience that defined the genre, set in the eerie Spencer Mansion, the game combines tense atmosphere, limited resources, and puzzle-solving to create genuine dread like few gaming experiences can provide. The fixed camera angles, tank controls (optional modern controls included), and pre-rendered backgrounds give it a cinematic, nostalgic feel, while the updated textures, lighting, and the featured considered a must for today's standards, widescreen support. The addition of Crimson Head zombies adds a terrifying twist that rewards (or punishes) strategic play, this adds some complexity to the game's combat, which was already very simple in the original title.

While the pacing and control scheme may feel dated for new players, fans of survival horror will appreciate its deliberate design and commitment to atmosphere. It's not just a remaster, it’s a benchmark of how to modernize a classic without losing its soul, a masterclass in survival horror, lovingly preserved for a new generation. This title and the original one from the Gamecube platform is one of the best remakes of all time, and is one of the oldest too, which is a big benchmark in gaming because we got plenty of them nowadays. There is not a single thing where this remake is bad, at least when it comes to enhancing the original ideas and mechanics of the base game, a true example of how remakes should be done.

Another standout element is the game’s sound design, which plays a crucial role in sustaining tension throughout the experience. The haunting ambient noises, distant footsteps, and sudden musical stingers create constant unease, often making silence more frightening than any direct encounter. Combined with the deliberately sparse save system and limited ammunition, the audio reinforces the feeling of vulnerability and isolation, ensuring that every decision, carries weight and consequence.

Beyond its technical and atmospheric strengths, this title excels in replayability and attention to detail. Multiple characters, alternate scenarios, and subtle narrative differences encourage repeat playthroughs, while hidden mechanics and enemy behaviors reward your knowledge and mastery. It respects the your intelligence and patience, offering an experience that grows richer over time. Even years after its release, it remains a definitive example of survival horror done right, standing tall not just as a remake, but as a timeless classic in its own right.

First playthrough of Resident Evil 1

It was really good, I loved it. I soft-locked myself right at the start of the game by picking up too many items before getting the sword key. That was kind of annoying, why not just add an item box to the first room? I also didn't know what crimson zombies were until a few hours in, and ended up …

It was really good, I loved it. I soft-locked myself right at the start of the game by picking up too many items before getting the sword key. That was kind of annoying, why not just add an item box to the first room? I also didn't know what crimson zombies were until a few hours in, and ended up backtracking to an older save so I could burn zombie bodies. Other than that, it was pretty smooth sailing. I did have to look at a guide a few times when figuring out where to go next. The graphics are still pretty good but it’s unfortunate they didn’t have the source masters for the pre-rendered backgrounds and instead had to uprez the original backgrounds. Still not bad though. I opted for the tank controls over the modern control scheme. The newer resident evil remakes made me want to play the original games, but this remake makes me feel like playing the og re1 is not necessary because it’s so good.

It's pure and true horror at its best.

Resident Evil HD Remaster is yet again an instant classic horror-survival game. The original Resident Evil may be outdated, it's still one of the best games ever made. Character models look better than the original, but they still seem a bit stiff and their expressions are rather blank or stone-like at times. The game is the best way for the …

Resident Evil HD Remaster is yet again an instant classic horror-survival game. The original Resident Evil may be outdated, it's still one of the best games ever made. Character models look better than the original, but they still seem a bit stiff and their expressions are rather blank or stone-like at times. The game is the best way for the new generation of gamers to discover the genesis of survival horror games. Definitely recommended for fans of the genre, as this is the pinnacle of what Shinji Mikami created all those years ago.
