Mortal Kombat 3 brings new elements to the 2D fighting series: multi-level playfields, "Dial-A-Combo" attacks, a "Run" button to speed up the battles, and "Vs." codes, which unlock new powers and abilities once both players enter a code sequence in pre-match-up screens. Also included are more stage fatalities and finishing moves as each warrior attempts to go one-on-one with the Centaurian enforcer Motaro, and Shao Kahn himself.

Supplanted By Trilogy/Ultimate, But Still Nostalgic And Great Sound

Preliminary: I had read this is the black sheep of the series, and for good reason, with the characters omitted. However, right away, it was just soooooo familiar. Now, I know that's really because I had the SNES port, I believe we had both this version and MK Trilogy? Or we had Ultimate MK3 and MK Trilogy? Either way, the familiarity of these settings, even the new characters, and most of all the soudns and the ability to run, are all too important for me not to give it an honorary 3. Even if either Ultimate or Trilogy will be the real one I loved so much. The symbol for this, the references to the movie, so much to love about this that set the foundation for thsoe later versions. Oh and at leats I can get a couple rounds in with this game, not as brutally hard from the start as the prior 2.

Then I wound up playing a round against my husband so yeah, it deserves its honrary 3 star

Ah, my younger brother said we had plain MK3 for PS1 (and Trilogy). I think I played a LOT of both before mk4 came out.

Look: 8/10 Classic

Sound: 8/10 A highlight

Play: 7.5/10

Feel: 8/10

Attachment: 7/10 Effectively replaced by Trilogy but still nice to have this moment of nostalgia.

Overall: 7.7/10

They took my boy scorpion away :(

You've no idea how much I missed hearing "Get Over Hear" while throwing a spear to the opponent!

Ok, let's talk for real for a moment. the game is surprisingly very good and has aged extremely well! I managed to land a combo easily, while the difficulty can be managed with some practice. the stages are looking great, the music is fantastic, but the roaster is really missing some big important names. I mainly kept playing with Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, Sonya, and Sheeva.

I may have over used the run and combo spam moves a few too many, but it was very satisfying when you pulled it off. I do feel like this is the best all rounder fighting game that got released 1995 during the Playstation's early days. not a lot of good fighting games were available next to this games, and the 3d fighting games at the time just couldn't compete with the likeness of Virtua Fighter, and the 16-bit fighting games. this game probably held a lot for the console to keep the fighting fans content for a while before the next breakout fighting game arrives.
