Sky Kid is a weird but charming little arcade game, which I first learned about via the Namco arcade collection on the Switch. This has you playing as a bird in a WWI plane (I'll just assume this is Star Fox's great-great-great-great-great grandfather), flying along in a side-scroller from right to left (!!!). You can move your plane forward and back, and even do a little spin backward to try getting behind enemies that fly in from the right. Shoot lots of planes, and fly low to shoot lots of tanks and ships. The graphics and sound are cute.
Two more things that I think are kind of nifty about this one: 1) If you get hit, you have a chance to button-mash back to life before your plane crashes into the ground. This is good incentive to fly up high, but from above there's no way to attack the many ground/sea vehicles gunning you from below. So you have options, but since this is an 80s arcade game chances are you're dead meat in no time. 2) You have the opportunity to pick up a large bomb and later try to drop it on a big target (enemy base, battleship, etc) toward the end of the level. Lots of points if you can pull it off, and it's just a fun extra thing to spice things up a bit.
Not the simplest arcade title of that era, and the difficulty in passing even just a couple levels was also likely a deterrent for arcade-goers at the time. But from the comfort of your home I think it's worth a shot. So do it!
