You are the legendary Red Baron, flying a plane through a horizontal side-scrolling scenery set during World War I. To complete a mission, you simply need to get to the landing spot on the other side without being shot down, but you can gain extra points by destroying enemy vehicles and planes. For huge points, pick up a bomb hidden in the level (you will be warned by a sound when approaching it) and drop it on a large structure. If you fail to land on the landing strip, you run out of fuel and crash. You can only shoot horizontally and diagonally by tilting the plane's nose. When in trouble, perform an aerial loop with the secondary button, this often destroys other planes and avoids bullets. There is a co-op mode with the character Max as well. Read less

A charming game but with the problems of its time

I liked it! the looks, visuals, music, and art style, all of them makes the game very pleasant to look at and to hear. The gameplay is solid. The rest of the game has its own feel, but it's nothing special to differentiate itself from the crowd at the time. Just another arcade shooter. while I enjoyed the game, and …

The rest of the game has its own feel, but it's nothing special to differentiate itself from the crowd at the time. Just another arcade shooter. while I enjoyed the game, and it is solid on its own, the difficulty curve is awful. It will throw you from 1 to 100 to 1000 really fast, and you will notice.

Sky Kid is a weird but charming little arcade game, which I first learned about via the Namco arcade collection on the Switch. This has you playing as a bird in a WWI plane (I'll just assume this is Star Fox's great-great-great-great-great grandfather), flying along in a side-scroller from right to left (!!!). You can move your plane forward and back, and even do a little spin backward to try getting behind enemies that fly in from the right. Shoot lots of planes, and fly low to shoot lots of tanks and ships. The graphics and sound are cute.

Two more things that I think are kind of nifty about this one: 1) If you get hit, you have a chance to button-mash back to life before your plane crashes into the ground. This is good incentive to fly up high, but from above there's no way to attack the many ground/sea vehicles gunning you from below. So you have options, but since this is an 80s arcade game chances are you're dead meat in no time. 2) You have the opportunity to pick up a large bomb and later try to drop it on a big target (enemy base, battleship, etc) toward the end of the level. Lots of points if you can pull it off, and it's just a fun extra thing to spice things up a bit.

Not the simplest arcade title of that era, and the difficulty in passing even just a couple levels was also likely a deterrent for arcade-goers at the time. But from the comfort of your home I think it's worth a shot. So do it!
