A fast paced, mind-bending horizontal shoot 'em up from Jeff Minter where the player must hop between parallel planets to survive. It also has a giant smiling yak head.

Congoatulations hot shot!
This review is for the Commodore C64/128/MAX version

I thought maybe I could get something played that was for atari 800 or C64 with little time. Technically this wasn't much time investment but it took longer than I expected it too. This game is hard as holy hell if not downright impossible. Good thing mine came 'trained' and 'fixed' by Hokotu Force.

It's an extremely confusing and chaotic game that I don't think anyone could really describe in words.

The whole game looks like it was inspired by LSD while playing Defender. (note this is a famous designer. He's known for making Tempest) By the end of the game I was imagining that maybe it was some kind of test that the Illuminati give potential recruits. Well to prove your worth to the illuminati, you will fight a million hallucinations, shooting everything imaginable but it's all symbols: flying penii, Floating Eyes, Eyes of Horus, Various Greek Letters, bongs, The symbol for Chaos, scooters, mushrooms. The whole game looks like it was inspired by LSD while playing Defender. (note this is a famous designer. Some enemies are actually 'fakes' and will change into other enemies. Some things are called 'lickers' and they will stick to you and kill you. The decepticon type enemies usually are lickers. The goal is to move around from 5 lands and repeatedly knock down the enemy 'counter' (which just to make it strange is displayed in Hex) But moving from one land to the next is an indescribable act. Certain sets of conditions must be met and it wasn't until I actually finished the game that I even knew what I was doing. You control two craft at once, each moving in opposite directions (it is supposed to represent the opposite hemisphere of the planet) and going to a different 'land' as well. You switch active control of the craft by stealing the souls of enemies you slay, but you have to time it exactly right and touch it while not shooting. Some enemies are worth souls and some are not. Other times the tenemies that were worth souls are now not. The game constantly keeps you guessing because it is never really clear what is going on. It changes its mind and mixes it up. You can also morph into a spider looking thing that can jump, but this is usally something you just do by accident, Between this and switching to the opposite side of the planet by mistake, it only added to the confusion. This is annoying but it's also a masterful depiction of what I can only assume to be an acid trip. enter image description here The game has some weird audio. There is no music and the sounds are rather simple, but some glitchy audio will arise resulting in the sounds becoming softer and softer like its fading out. And then, if you stop shooting it will reset itself. I dont think it is a bug but is to make it more psychedelic and trippy. XD

The game also has a minigame when you pause it called Made In France (MIF) it's similar to Snake or Light cycles but every time you turn you drop a flipper that you will bounce off of when you hit it again. and when you eat a pellet there is a big starburst explosion that will clear any flippers you've dropped that the explosion touches. It's pretty cool.

There is also a 'secret minigame' that is not really a game but just a kind of scene-like intro of spinning eyeballs forming a dna strand. you can change the color and movement. weird.

The game also has a crazy bonus round you get when you land on the ground and go into spider mode, pumping your harvested soul energy back into the planet (according to the manual) in the bonus mode you play a game kind of a bit like the old spider man for 2600 where you have to climb a building. but you move your craft in the opposite direction and shoot in the direction you press. meanwhile you are chased by a scary looking snake made up of eyes. The whole time you are bouncing against various obstacles, many of which are invisible. your movement is super sensitive and you have a real lack of control so its a very squirrely kind of movement. The snake also sort of hovers around you in and out and is also very erratic. The screen also flashes its hardest trying to make you have either a drug induced OBE or epileptic seizure, maybe both. This minigame repeats itself many times throughout the game and it has different look and obstacles each time. Since the game resets on the ending with little fanfare other than a circle of eyes saying "Bonus 10,000" (Tempest?) I would consider this minigame the real end of the game for practical purposes.. IF you somehow pass this final test of the illuminati you are greeted with a very creepy (but satisfactory and appropriate) win screen.

The game isn't very well made. it has bugs and flaws (especially the bonus game) its extremely repetitive and harkens back to an era of coin-op derived game design schemas which just try to 'kill the player' But the game is creative and different and for an early title goes in places and takes routes generally not taken. I actually liked this game XD
