Played through with tons of rewind, save states to try alternate pathways (which only really works for single player- infinite lives would be better for two player)- accidentally went into the battle arena, that alternate ending was a surprise.

Contra Hard Corps is a 1994 run-and-gun game.Konami, the producer and distributor of the game, have done a great job.The story of the game is as follows. In 2641, an elite commando team called the "Unified Military Special Mobile Task Force K-x", also known as the "Contra Hard Corps", was assembled to combat the rapid spread of crime and illegal activities in the aftermath of the war. When an unknown hacker infiltrates the city's security system and reprograms a group of unmanned robots to cause damage, the Sert Corps is deployed to handle the situation. The members include male soldier Ray Poward;female soldier Sheena Etranzi; Brad Fang, a wolf-like humanoid with two cybernetic arms; and Browny, a small robot that can navigate. Dec.Ray, Sheena and Brad later made a brief cameo in the twinbee Paradise interactive game in donburishima. The game begins when the hardcore Corps is deployed to a large city to destroy a group of unmanned weapons reprogrammed to attack civilians. At the end of the first stage, the player confronts a robot led by cyborg mercenary Deadeye Joe, who escaped after the battle. At this point, the Hard Corps, Dr. Geo receives an emergency call from Mandrake reporting that the government's research center has been attacked by an unknown group. The player can choose to follow deadeye Joe or go to the research center to thwart the terrorists, each path leads to a different second stage. Regardless of the chosen path, both stages converge on a common route. In the third stage, the player is sent to a junkyard to capture the notorious hacker Noiman Cascade, while the fourth stage takes place in the forest, where the enemy's bunker is located. In the fifth stage, the hard Corps will be caught in a trap by the enemy leader Colonel Bahamut, and the player will be given another option. From this point on, depending on the player's choice, the story is divided into four possible paths, each of which has its own conclusion. There is also a secret Colosseum stage with its own ending, for a total of five Possible outcomes. The gameplay is as follows.in this game consisting of 6 sections, you are trying to kill the creatures and pass the section. The music of the game is beautiful. If you are not too obsessed with graphics and you like retro games, this game is for you.My rating for the game: 10/10 (y) Good games to everyone 🙂

The Good: Damn it's amazing. The perfect run-and-gun. The most radical early 90s anything you'll ever see.

The Bad: Holy shit is it merciless. One-hit kills, and yeah, it's a Contra game. Do not go gentle into that good night.

I was able to beat the top path today (chase dead eye jack, fight the scientist guy) and that feels really good! I've got most of it locked down. I also beat secret the joke ending.

I'm gonna go for the good ending before writing up a review and marking this one as "done"

Really awesome game though! Since I'm used to really hard shmups like DoDonPachi this wasn't as hard as I thought it would be based on the hype. It's still hard though

Really enjoying this game so far! I played it a few years ago and rage quit after not being able to pass the third level, but for some reason this time around I'm smarter about how I play it and have been finding ways to cheese the bosses and waves of enemies. It's not so hard if you take the time to look for spots where you don't get hit and how to leverage different weapons to maximize or hit enemies from safe positions.

I've gotten to the very end of level 4 so far with Ray on the top path and I'm sure I can get to level 5 if I give it another attempt. I'm hoping I can beat this in 2-3 more sessions.

Best Contra by a long stretch.

This has to be one of the best 16-bit titles made. Konami were really firing on all cylinders at this point in time.

I highly recommend playing the Japanese version (or the MiJet patch).

The US version is just pointlessly hard (they did this for the rental market, so people couldn't beat it and would constantly re-rent it). The developers never intended it to be played that way, so do yourself a favour and play it as it was intended.

The crazy challenge of the US copy can be kinda fun though.

One could argue the best title in the series..

It has everything you could possibly want in an action game: kick ass graphics, a great soundtrack, and non-stop action. The only thing holding it back is its insane difficulty. Throughout all this there are frequent boss encounters. At the end of almost every level you are presented with two options. These choices not only lead to new levels but also changes the game’s story as well. It suffers a bit due to its cruel difficulty. But aside from that it is almost a masterpiece. The game is too great not to see all of its content.

Another Contra crazy action game!

This pearl that I just came across in a Mega Drive Mini and I have to say. What a blast!

Following the run 'n shoot of previous cannon Contra Games, Probotector/Contra Hard Corps is nothing new for the series' fans.

Brilliantly animated, the sprites are very well designed, bosses are on point and, following the Contra tradition, a nightmare to kill!

It's a fun game, with an extreme over the top difficulty - or it wouldn't even be Contra at all, that allows you to spend hours and hours of trial and error, failing over and over again, just to kill another guy, while dodging dozens of bullets, missiles, tentacles(or whatever those metal stretchy things are).

Definitely recommend to all Contra lovers (who most probably are well acquainted with this game) and to side scrolling action run-and-gun enthusiasts.

You won't be disappointed!

While this game is very difficult, it's not impossible but limiting the lives and continues so severely makes it hard to get into this game even when it's this fun. But if you can get good enough to survive, you'll be treated to some awesome levels and bosses. I liked that there are branching paths, different endings and different characters with their own unique weapons. The addition of the slide move was great and added a new twist to the series. The variety in this game is impressive. I still remember the running highway level and Deadeye Joe in his giant robot. I had to play this game as Browny since he has the yoyo weapon and can double jump. He's also small so you can survive a bit longer with him. I never beat it on the Genesis although I think I got fairly far into it.

I'm not sure how good the Contra games after this one are but I do miss side scrolling shooters like Contra and wish they would come back. A sequel along the lines of Hard Corps with multiple paths, endings and characters with unique weapons would be amazing. Or just take this game, add 4 player simultaneous co-op and provide options like activating the Japanese version's 3 hit health bar and increasing the number of lives and continues.

Funnily enough I just discovered that there are apparently "repro" carts of an enhanced edition of Hard Corps that include hacks that restore some of the Japanese features to the US version to make the game's difficulty more manageable.

really enjoying this. Not as hard as I thought once I dug in. Able to get to level 3 after a couple hours of playing
