I'm playing the version available in the Advance Collection. Honestly, I was expecting the collection to have Rondo of Blood instead, I wasn't paying enough attention.

Out of the classic-style games, this is my favorite visually and audio-wise. I really like jumping on and off of stairs, the changes to the sub-weapons, and the item crash. I feel like this is the best sub-weapons have ever been in the series. Things I don't like: the difficulty, level design, and movement. In all of the other games, I can beat the first few stages before I start running into trouble. This time, I ran into difficulty during the first level. The game loves knocking you into pits. It's super prevalent in this game. The movement feels great for the most part, but this is another game that makes you drop like a rock with no air control. I like the backflip, but I wish it was more lenient with when you can activate it. You basically have to decide you're going to backflip before you leave the ground. Out of the 16-bit Castlevanias I've played, this is probably my least favorite overall.

I had planned to play Symphony of the Night and Dracula X Chronicles, but I think I'm going to skip those for now. I kind of just want to play the games in the collections because I have other games to knock off of my backlog. Excited to play the Metroidvanias because those are the games I'm more familiar with and it will be a nice change of pace after finishing the difficult games.

Edit: I forgot to mention I ended up getting one of the bad endings. I'm slightly disappointed because I was on the right path, but I just didn't follow all of the pre-requisites to get the true ending. It was pretty obscure, but games were pretty cryptic before.

Edit 2: Forgot to mention two things. There are no invincibility frames for the player in this game. One mistake can be costly, even towards common enemies. The other thing I wanted to bring up is the sub-weapon switch system. In other games, sub-weapons would be replaced if you picked up another. In this one, the old weapon will be dropped on the ground to be picked back up. Super useful mechanic to make it so you don't lose a sub-weapon you wanted more on accident.

Beat the game but got the bad ending because I did not rescue anyone. I found the key and kept it until the next level thinking it was important. Beat the game but got the bad ending because I did not rescue anyone. I found the key and kept it until the next level thinking it was important. But soon after I said the hell with this I want a fancy weapon. Tried out all the weapons and preferred the axe for its verticality. I did enjoy the game but missed being able to use the whip in different ways like in Super Castlevania 4. Other than the short length I found it to be a good game; so good that I wanted it to be longer.
