Finally put some thoughts I've been having about old RPGs into video form. Loved Super Mario RPG, but starting to get so tired of the mandatory grind in older RPGs like this. It just makes me not want to play them. I don't know if it's because I'm older now or more used to modern games with more fluid experiences, but the idea of stopping to do even 30 minutes of grinding is so mind numbing to me in 2017. Loved this game, but when I got to the end, I just chose to watch the ending on YouTube rather than go back and grind out another few levels. Maybe I'm just getting OLD.

The first game I really fell in love with. And probably the first one I actually finished by myself. I honestly cannot accurately tell you how much I love this game, or how much it influenced me, without embarrassing myself.

I can't think about Super Mario RPG without my mind immediately going to Booster Tower. Maybe it's because that's where Bowser joins my party and we rescue Toadstool, maybe it's Booster himself and the goofy puzzles and minigames in his tower... part of me thinks it's the floor pattern of all things...

Regardless, I managed to clean up that whole …

Regardless, I managed to clean up that whole arc pretty neatly and finally have a complete party.

I have a ton of nostalgia-induced love for this game. Playing it with my dad as a kid is still a standout memory for me, and I've been wanting to revisit it forever. That's probably why I spend over three hours playing Super Mario RPG during my first day with it! Well, that and the fact that my kid loves watching me play this one while I read the dialogue to her, and I do a mean Bowser voice!

I got farther that I expected to in that time, and I'm wondering if the game is shorter than I remember. The combat is still fun and the upscaler isn't throwing off attack timings at all. Music is fantastic and the humor is just great. Good start to a good game.

I finished off Super Mario RPG over the weekend. It's RPG system is definitely a bit of a slog without great character development. I fell into using all my Flower Points/MP on healing spells and thus never used special abilities, making them pretty meaningless in what I felt was the most effective strategy. Weapon and equipment progressions are lame. A hammer that looks identical to the one I got when the game started? Great.

The good though was the writing, and I definitely see how it set up the future games in they style.

I'm making good progress in Mario RPG. It's definitely an interesting game. I've reached that bummer spot in so many RPGs where you have to start swapping characters in and out of your party though.

So I decided I'm going to try and tackle all of the Mario RPG games, as I've never finished one (unless you count Super Paper Mario). So here we go!
