This morning, the 50cc Mushroom Cup was won with a single controller.

I on the DPad while my kiddo sat amazed in my lap, armed with the B Button. We chose 'Mushroom Guy'

The trophy was on the screen for a moment but the memory will live forever in my heart.

Mushroom Guy Wins!

It's good, but it definitely shows its age compared to the rest of the series. Collecting coins is basically pointless in this version, and there are too many laps so every course feels overly long. However, for the time, this was definitely a competitive and entertaining Mario-themed racing game that would eventually become a long-running series on its own.

A good introducton to the mario kart series and very revolutionary gameplay for the time. Obviously today it is hard to control and looks pretty terrible but it is still fun. Bowsers Castle 3 is my favourite course.

This really exposes how finicky the drifting in this game is, and how little fun it is. No, it's not impossible to figure out, but the difficulty for it doesn't feel earned. There's maps with pretty much 180 turns and the drifting at regular speed is insanity, you have to immediately hop, drift, stop drift, and brake near the same time, and you still barely get the turn while the CPUs just take it in stride. It's a moment where you feel the AI is cheating because, well, they are.

I like how there's a shortcut where Lakitu tells you to stop but it's actually a way to go if you have a feather.

Drifting is fucking hard in this game I swear to god Beat pretty much everything on 50cc, getting a comeback from 5th to 1st on the last lap is really hard in this game. Probably the least amount of leeway for a starting boost I've seen in a Kart game. Still having some fun though!

3D on the SNES works about as well as a horse with a broken leg. It did kick off some better updates tho so I'll give it a 2.

Playing super mario kart on the Super Nt with the wife is amazing. I think I managed to convince her that Mode 7 graphics are cool. I didn't know her when I got my original SNES cart. My worlds are colliding... nostalgia + wifey = new nostalgia?

I played this classic SNES title off and on over the years, but could never get the hang of it. (That Mode 7 can take some getting used to.) Taking the time to practice lately has helped a lot for gaining an appreciation for it though. This came out all the way back in 1992, just crazy. There were plenty of other solid arcade-style racing games before it of course, and even some racers that involved power-ups and/or combat to varying degrees. But the original Mario Kart still felt fresh in how it pieced everything together, expanded on past concepts, and incorporated elements of the Mario games into a wacky racing formula.

This game is a tough one; it'll take many hours to get good enough to win all the tournaments (especially on the highest difficulty). Where the game really shines though is in its 2-player mode, which is still a hoot to this day. In some ways, I actually prefer this entry to later ones in the Mario Kart franchise. No blue shells! Hallelujah! The levels aren't as exciting or varied as later entries, but it does well enough for an opener. And you can play as Donkey Kong Junior, how about that? I'm still waiting for a Mario Kart that lets me play as Mouser though... T____T

I've replayed this many times on each of the rereleases, but man, playing it with the SNES controller on Switch triggered so much more muscle memory from 20 years ago. I'm better at it than I ever was on Wii or Wii U and it just all feels so good and comfy. Still the best Mario Kart.

I was hoping to finish Control today, but thought I'd have a quick round of this first. Koopa Troopa needs to be taught a lesson to not fuck with me. Control can wait. KT and DK jr will be destroyed.
