The very first Mario Kart entry is a foundational title that introduced kart-based competition and also established a new gaming franchise. The game uses the system’s Mode 7 graphical capabilities to simulate a pseudo-3D racing environment, giving tracks a sense of depth, rotation, and speed that was impressive for its time. While primitive by modern standards, the visual presentation remains charming and functional, with colorful environments and clear track layouts. If you can get past the technical limitations for its visuals, you'll find a very original art-style to appreciate, and not just for the standards at the time, because it kept being consistent in the subsequent entries.

At its core, the gameplay blends straightforward racing mechanics with inventive item-based combat. You select from a roster of recognizable characters (except for Donkey Kong, because it got completely revamped in the Country series). Each with subtle differences in speed, handling, and acceleration, which adds a layer of strategy when choosing a driver. They are mostly divided by three categories: lightweight, heavy and balanced. Particularly I liked to play with lightweight characters (Toad and Koopa) because they have the best handling, even thought they have poor acceleration. And I really tried to like heavy ones (Donkey Kong and Bowser) since they have the best acceleration, but this made it very difficult to deal with more complex tracks.

The tracks themselves are varied, ranging from tight technical circuits to more open layouts, and each requires a different approach to master. Items like shells, bananas, and speed boosts introduce unpredictability, turning even a losing race into a potential comeback. This mix of skill and chaos became the defining identity of the series. Thought I got to say that, playing this alone was a challenging experience, since the bot-controlled racers are incredibly tough. You simply cannot make up any advantage, if you are going 1st place for too long, they start using "bot-exclusive" items to make you fall behind. This makes even the most simple tracks to be very dynamic since you can never let your guard down.

The control scheme, while responsive, can feel slippery due to the heavy emphasis on drifting and momentum, which may take time to fully understand. Once mastered, it allows for precise cornering and rewarding skill expression. Personally speaking, even thought I managed to beat the hardest difficulty level (150cc) I never fully mastered the drifting mechanics. Instead, I focused on trying to use shortcuts, the items and also carefully maneuvering the vehicle, hence why I preferred to go with more lightweight drivers. The game also includes a Battle Mode, which adds replay value though I admit that I never really played this mode.

The multiplayer is where the game truly shines, competing against a friend in split-screen mode creates intense, often chaotic races filled with last-second item hits and dramatic finishes. Even today, this local multiplayer aspect remains one of the game’s strongest features, capturing the social spirit that would become a hallmark of the series. I focused on completing the "main campaign" this time, but I have some experience playing local split-screen, and it is indeed one of the best titles to experience this. Though I would also recommend the single-player approach since the bots offer an insane (and somewhat unbalanced) challenge, if you are into that.

Although the game has a relatively small roster and limited number of tracks compared to later entries, its tight design ensures that every course feels memorable. As for the OST, it complements the action perfectly, my favorite song is the one for the Rainbow Road stage. In retrospect, this game may feel dated in terms of mechanics and content, but its importance cannot be overstated. It laid the groundwork for future entries and influenced countless other racing games. More than just a nostalgic title, it remains a fun and historically significant experience that still holds. A must play if you like kart games to any extent, and about my only big complaint is the difficulty level balance, that heavily abuses of the rubber banding technique.

I decided to watch a longplay of Super Mario Kart after getting absolutely destroyed playing with a friend and realizing I was never going to unlock the Special Cup Race. I've mostly played Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 8 so I don't have much experience with previous titles and wanted to experience more from the series.

Main Thoughts

  • The controls were simple but difficult to execute (at least for me).
  • The game looks great! I love how colorful the tracks were.
  • Seeing the different personalities for each character on the placement screen with the champagne bottles is cute.
  • Peach's name isn't mentioned. She's only referred to as "Princess".
  • Most of the tracks were recycled with a different route on certain rounds and cup races.
  • Recognizing the original Rainbow Road and other tracks was fun to see. Rainbow Road being the secret unlockable is a pretty great reward too, especially how distinct it is compared to the other tracks.

Truly Precedent-Setting

Preliminary: Wow it really is impressive how many precedents this set for the kart racing genre, and I loved CTR growing up. This is definitely best played with someone else but wow. Preliminary: Wow it really is impressive how many precedents this set for the kart racing genre, and I loved CTR growing up. This is definitely best played with someone else but wow. The weapons already, the jump, the skidding, very impressed. The music and Look feel a bit lackluster but at the same time are impressive, it's hard to explain. I loved the character selection screen and the number of characters to choose from. I picked Toad, as per usual, and got 1st place right off the bat. I need to play some OSRS but will definitely be returning to thist o at least finish a cup!

Dang I crushed the Mushroom Cup. I will have to try one of the presumably harder cups tomorrow. enter image description here enter image description here

Ohhh I see the cc must play a role and there is even a special cup. I will do my research tomorrow.

Day 2

Wow there's even Time Trial Mode, and so many things that set the stage for other kart racing games. Whether I am up to doing all 3 cups at 100cc is yet to be deftermiend cuz that will be a lot of time... I wish it weren't 5 roudns that's kinda a lot. But as long as I keep having fun and the difficulty keeps eassssing up rather than being too much, it should be worth it to at least see the tracks of the Special Cup... at least I hope it's new tracks? (Wow, there's even Battle Mode!) And wow! There are unique tracks for all! This is so impressive!!! And if the quality remaisn high, this will definitely be worth palying through it all through the Special Cup and trying Batlte Mode too! I'll make my husband play for a bit lol.

Day 2

This has literally everything to expect from a kart racing game. It truly set all the precedents. The AI even feels modern, to maintain a sense of challenge but also doability, but maybe that's just me. The tracks keep being interesting, tho this ice one with the blocks in the way si annoying it maeks sense.

Uff this one was difficult! Barely scraped by. Princess Peach is always so good! enter image description here

Uff the Special Cup is tough so far but instead of trying to get 1st place in the Cup, I will settle with just seeing all the different tracks. Will have to do some battle mode too for that.

Meh okay I'm burning out in the Special Cup cuz you can't move on being last place lol. This is still incredibly impressive and set so many precedents.Time to do some Battle Mode and then move on

Look: 8.5/10

Sound: 8.5/10

Play: 8/10 Set the stage for everything, but definitely worked out better in later versions/kart games.

Feel: 9/10

Attachment: 8.5/10 The fact I really wanna play this with my husband or brothers, and that it set the stage for a genre I really like (tho I prefer the level selection of CTR... Speaking of, I am curious to see which kart game did that first, probly wasn't CTR).

Overall: 8.5/10

This morning, the 50cc Mushroom Cup was won with a single controller.

I on the DPad while my kiddo sat amazed in my lap, armed with the B Button. We chose 'Mushroom Guy'

The trophy was on the screen for a moment but the memory will live forever in my heart.

Mushroom Guy Wins!

It's good, but it definitely shows its age compared to the rest of the series. Collecting coins is basically pointless in this version, and there are too many laps so every course feels overly long. However, for the time, this was definitely a competitive and entertaining Mario-themed racing game that would eventually become a long-running series on its own.

A good introducton to the mario kart series and very revolutionary gameplay for the time. Obviously today it is hard to control and looks pretty terrible but it is still fun. Bowsers Castle 3 is my favourite course.

This really exposes how finicky the drifting in this game is, and how little fun it is. No, it's not impossible to figure out, but the difficulty for it doesn't feel earned. There's maps with pretty much 180 turns and the drifting at regular speed is insanity, you have to immediately hop, drift, stop drift, and brake near the same time, and you still barely get the turn while the CPUs just take it in stride. It's a moment where you feel the AI is cheating because, well, they are.

I like how there's a shortcut where Lakitu tells you to stop but it's actually a way to go if you have a feather.

Drifting is fucking hard in this game I swear to god Beat pretty much everything on 50cc, getting a comeback from 5th to 1st on the last lap is really hard in this game. Probably the least amount of leeway for a starting boost I've seen in a Kart game. Still having some fun though!

3D on the SNES works about as well as a horse with a broken leg. It did kick off some better updates tho so I'll give it a 2.

Playing super mario kart on the Super Nt with the wife is amazing. I think I managed to convince her that Mode 7 graphics are cool. I didn't know her when I got my original SNES cart. My worlds are colliding... nostalgia + wifey = new nostalgia?

I played this classic SNES title off and on over the years, but could never get the hang of it. (That Mode 7 can take some getting used to.) Taking the time to practice lately has helped a lot for gaining an appreciation for it though. This came out all the way back in 1992, just crazy. There were plenty of other solid arcade-style racing games before it of course, and even some racers that involved power-ups and/or combat to varying degrees. But the original Mario Kart still felt fresh in how it pieced everything together, expanded on past concepts, and incorporated elements of the Mario games into a wacky racing formula.

This game is a tough one; it'll take many hours to get good enough to win all the tournaments (especially on the highest difficulty). Where the game really shines though is in its 2-player mode, which is still a hoot to this day. In some ways, I actually prefer this entry to later ones in the Mario Kart franchise. No blue shells! Hallelujah! The levels aren't as exciting or varied as later entries, but it does well enough for an opener. And you can play as Donkey Kong Junior, how about that? I'm still waiting for a Mario Kart that lets me play as Mouser though... T____T

I've replayed this many times on each of the rereleases, but man, playing it with the SNES controller on Switch triggered so much more muscle memory from 20 years ago. I'm better at it than I ever was on Wii or Wii U and it just all feels so good and comfy. Still the best Mario Kart.

I was hoping to finish Control today, but thought I'd have a quick round of this first. Koopa Troopa needs to be taught a lesson to not fuck with me. Control can wait. KT and DK jr will be destroyed.

Dit spel is gewoon mijn jeugd. Fantastisch dat ik dit weer kan doen door de SNES mini. Het sturen is nog steeds prut, maar dat is deel van de charme. In je eentje kun je alleen niet bij de battlemodes komen.

Put on any Mario Kart game and all hell breaks loose. Despite being over 20 years old it has actually aged very well. All the classic weapons are there, turtle shells, banana peels, stars, mushrooms, lightning bolts and more. This game is actually a LOT harder than I remember it being, but maybe that's just the adjustment of going back to 16-bit racing (It took about 5 tries to get gold in 150cc special cup) While the single player Grand Prix is fun the real fun factor in any Mario Kart game comes from it's multiplayer. Racing along with a buddy throwing junk at each other is great for a laugh and a good time, and the battle mode on the SNES game is awesome (unlike current MK games) Definitely recommend, especially if you have a New 3DS.

Cons: graphics have not aged well, less accessable than later entries, multiplayer limited to two players

Recommendation: I never owned this game when I was younger, so I didn't have much in the way of nostalgia when I played it. I personally would stick with one of the newer console Mario Karts, like 64, Wii, or 8. That being said, I am aware that some people love this game to death, as it takes serious skill to master it.
