Esper Boukentai is a platform action game developed by Jaleco for the Famicom and published in 1987. It is an exploration game which uses Jaleco's arcade game Psychic 5 as the basis for the story and the cast of characters which you use throughout the game. Each character possesses different attributes, including their jumping ability, their ability to hover in mid-air, and their strength. As in the arcade, some characters must be rescued in order to make them playable. This game boasts over 50 household items which serve as animated enemies throughout each level.

Terrible Combat Mars The Fun Platforming And Adventure Game Potential
This review is for the Nintendo Entertainment System version

Preliminary: Hm. Platformer with action-adventure and RPG elements? (Even leveling?!) But I read it starts very hard and money is hard to grind, hopefully they just mean time-consuming cuz I don't mind a long grind as long as it isn't too frustrating mechanics-wise :-p Hmmm interesting, some crazy high jumps there and sporadic movement reminding me of 86/87 arcade games, even the hammer attack keeping you afloat a bit reminds me of (OMG THIS TOOK ME SO LONG TO REMEMBER THE NAME OF) Psychic 5. There were other games, tho, from this era where you can keep your jumps longer by attacking. Lots actually.

Not sure how I feel about the mechanics/gameplay so far, too sporadic feeling, but I love how some of the characters are good guys. They're all like? household items? But the vacuum cleaner told me a nice hint. Some outright terrible collision masks with the platforms tho. And the graphics are... simply not good. (tho the idea for the sprites is good, like the Bed etc.)

Look: 7/10 This should be a 6/10, but I love when household objects are used in games. Technically terrible graphics for its time.

Sound: 7/10 I like when the jingle turned a bit after talking to the Spoon with my rescued friend (Mako). Usually NES jingles get annoying quite quickly, glad I've gotten used to retro Sound and tend to keep it on, this one included. (Although I continued to enjoy the jingle, why oh why would we need that annoying sound effect every time a sprite spawns? Especially when they spawn so often, so poorly, so sporadically, and so glitchily?)

Play: 6/10 I'm enjoying the adventure elements a lot in this, the dialogue actually is helpful in some ways and it's been fun so far. But the combat makes no sense! So the grinding aspect isn't very doable. And videos I watch online don't seem to clear it up. Yay! Okay, crisis averted. Even tho the combat collision masks and mechanics are still outright terribly done, I did find a great place to train/grind. And we all know how much I love that. enter image description here

Still, the spawning of even this enemy was very glitchy (indeed, an invisible one I could train off for free would sometimes appear lol), all enemies/characters would disappear sometimes, and the collision masks made no sense at all.

Feel: 7/10 (Oh, turns out my Psychic 5 comparison was very predictable heh, and indeed, I'm not alone in findingt he combat a huge bog in an otherwise interesting game http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/esper-boukentai/ )

I bet most people hated the inclusion for repetitive grinds in the likes of Castlevania and this game, but I love it lol. That's what saved the game for me. Just forcing a well-placed-for-grinding enemy to spawn then die over and over is deliciously simple :-p and that's how I like my gaming. Smh at myself heh.

Attachment: 7/10 Tho the gameplay's sporadic and glitchy nature made the combat less enjoyable, it did make the pacing of the game fast in a fun way. Like, I would touch an idol and immediately be through the door it unlocked. And that helped push me through the mediocre gameplay--that and the grinding. I just kept thinking "oh, well, I already got through that area so might as well just finish it up." Yay! Got my 2nd character, probly a good wrapping up place. To think I still don't even know how to use the Esper :-p Bashing with a hammer has sufficed so far :-p (reminds me of Earthbound BASH ha).

On my 2nd play session, I was thinking, it sure would be nice to have a map :-p Well, I know there's the menu map but uh enter image description here

It was at this point that I realized, what the hell am I doing? Lol. This has to be the worst combat system I've ever experienced in a videogame, retro or not. You only are damaged by tiny projectiles that are swarmed at you, which can be hit away, but to hit the enemies, you have to be above them, but they always float a bit above you, so there's just a handful of good spots to train and otherwise the combat system is purely a tacky frustrating experience to rush through focusing on the adventure elements while seeing your Metroid-type health go down up above but luckily there are countless healing spots throughout the game and money is easy to come by. I think the only reason I even got this far was because, well, I had gotten that far and figured I should finish ha. Plus I had navigated a confusing map, grinded to Level 5, got all the characters, it just seemed like I should finish. But no, I need to remind myself there are so many games out there and no reason to deal with a technically awful game that really only scored as high as it did because it has a genre that I tend to get hooked to. enter image description here

Completion: All characters, was prepping to unlock the prison and then take on the Devil but realized why am I doing this to myself. Playtime: 1h 50m
