Urban Champion is a 2-player fighting game produced by Nintendo in 1984. It was inspired by the 1984 Game & Watch title, Boxing (also known as Punch-Out!!). It is also Nintendo's first 2D fighting game, followed by the 1993 Joy Mech Fight, released exclusively in Japan for the same platform.

Urban Champion: Gets Old Quick
This review is for the Nintendo Entertainment System version

Urban Champion starts out with few minutes and maybe rounds of something decent, but becomes a dull and frustrating affair extremely quickly.

The purpose of the game is very simple - knock the opponent into a manhole after beating them back a few rounds. Every three rounds gets a symbol, with 45 symbols to become the champion. Instead of HP, the character has stamina and a time limit, with getting hit/using moves costing stamina. It seems complex, but it's mostly "hit and don't get hit". The player has two stances (high and mediumish) and two types of punches, the heavier one knocking the opponent back. There are some things to spice it up like flower pots falling from windows and police coming by, but they get old quick. There's some fun to be had in 2P but the computer gets exceedingly irritating to fight without even getting close to being the Champion.

The music and sounds aren't particularly exciting - the animation of the player as they punch and show emotion flexing a victory or hiding from cops is admirable, but the environment is incredibly repetitive, with different colored/named storefronts with little to no other details. This game packs perhaps …

Lmao!

It only takes 5 Minutes to see what this game has to offer, and it's bare bone AF. There barely is any sort of animation. Lol.

The controls are literally a Worse of what Punch-Out would offer.

It's a BARE BONE game.

Imagine getting this instead of Super Mario Bros. in 1986.

The First Rule of Urban Champion...
This review is for the Nintendo Entertainment System version

enter image description here

...is; You don't have to play Urban Champion. It's a simple beat-em-up where you advance one step at a time, duel style, towards your opponent outside different stores, businesses and other locations - as you try to knock your enemy down an open manhole.

Every now and then the police drive by and the fight stops for a moment until they pass you. Watch out, the occasional flower pot is thrown from the windows above you. There's only one high and one low attack, as you walk step by step forward. It's pretty restricted and gets repetitive quickly. This has not aged that well, but I bet it was cool back in the day, and most people have heard about this title I think.
