Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei (1987)

Preliminay: Phew, there is a fan translation of the orginal Famicom version. Let's get started! Whoa, I never knew what the series was about. I love this idea of a programmer summoning demons! lol. Oh no tho it's first person ah! So far, great music and I'm oddly enjoying this starting "town" as bleak as it is.

Great music, great concept, decent execution. Too Wizardry-esque for me, I guess I will never get over this aversion to first person dungeon crawler RPGs >.< Cuz this did everything right!

I trained up to Level 3, hadn't died once (people said it's super easy to? Just use Med? I suppose if you didn't give enough Wisdom to a character maybe?) and was enjoying it more than I expected but I dunno. Can't quite click with this type of RPG, and with so many exciting games coming up, I can't stick to it. I will say, this is by far the best of the CRPG-style first person dungeon crawlers I've played so far. Sadly, moving on.

Atlus games are extremely repetitive, so to enjoy them you have to like this formula or at least put up with it.

I would rate these games as a "harder Pokemon" but with a lot more replays of battles. With no description of what the spells do, and as the name is not at all intuitive, you have to find out what each one does with trial and error, along with the difficulty of the game that can frustrate many. The game also has several annoying traps that drain your HP or reset your position on the map.

I really liked the monster designs and the idea of catching new demons, merging them, and creating new strategies is really fun.

In addition, it is a game that requires a mind that can put itself in that time. If you don't have a lot of patience and are very anxious, this might not be the game for you. The same thing goes for Megami tensei 2 and Shin megami tensei 1/2
