I started with toad man because toad was the lamest thing there, and I was right. His rain attack hit the entire screen so it was good for hitting awkward enemies. Next I did dust man because I figured rain would wash away dust, but that was wrong. He was more like garbage man and his attack shot a piece of junk that could explode off in 4 pieces diagonally. Next was bright man because I figured dust would obstruct the light. Turns out he was countered by the rain so that worked out fine. His weapon froze time just like flash man, and it came in very handy for some of the tricky platforming to freeze enemies. Next I did dive man thinking it was more about diving into the ground rather than under the water and that freezing would stop the diving. His torpedo was the standard homing missile even outside of the water. Next I did ring man figuring homing missiles could go through rings. This was a brutal fight that took a lot of save scumming until I finally figured out the pattern to not get hit by the return boomerangs. This weapon was a traditional boomerang but had much less range than the boss's attacks. Next I did drill man only because I figured pharaoh man might counter the skull. It went all right because the homing missiles owned the drill. The drill shot was decent with an area explosion that could be remote detonated. Next was Pharaoh man who was trivial with the time stop. His ball could be shot up diagonally (but not straight up), and could be charged up to rest a ball above his head, which could be used like a shield. And last was skull man who of course was easy with all other weapons unlocked, and his skull shield was another leaf shield. I guessed quite a few of the weaknesses incorrectly and had to kill almost half of the bosses without the proper weapon.

The ideal order would be: toad, bright, pharaoh, ring, dust, skull, dive, drill.

Ring man was the most difficult due to his low boomerang shot. I found these bosses more difficult than in previous Mega Man games, even with the appropriate weapon, making even the boss gauntlet towards the end still a fair challenge. There were no repeat bosses from the previous games but double the amount of castle bosses at the end made up for it. Some of the bosses were quite creative too, particularly the gun inside the platforming box. Though the hide and seek final boss was more tedious than challenging. I did not use the charge up shot for most of the game as it was faster and simpler to just use the regular shot. The only times it came in handy were during boss fights and against those skeleton robots that could not be defeated with regular shot. The platforming was significantly easier than the previous games, and the stages themselves felt simpler and easier. There were few situations that encouraged the use of special weapons, despite how versatile those weapons were. At the same time this game lacked some of the obnoxious sequences of the previous ones, and was considerably easier. I did not like how the dog jet could no longer be controlled. Overall still an amazing NES game but the quality was down a bit from #2 and 3.

8.3/10

Pretty middle of the road Mega Man game, but it was alright. There's thankfully no Doc Robot sections and the two fortresses didn't overstay their welcome.

First time playing it. Three levels completed. One of them was meh, the other two were fine. Doesn't seems bad.

I think some of the bosses are okay, Pharaoh Man is awesome, I think it's nice the game gives you TWO boss castles, however I think they just drag on, so I'm not so sure about those parts. It's NOT without it's positive aspects though! The buttons and controls feel VERY receptive! I think the appearance of Proto Man is AWSUM! Even though he appears for a couple minutes, his appearance definitely earns a gold star for me. Some of the bosses actually are incredibly interesting though, their weapons are great and add something new and interesting. So while I didn't love it, It's not bad either, plus the addition of the Mega Buster is groundbreaking. (reviewed on legacy collection for switch)

Добро пожаловать, Mega Man

You can say it's "just another Mega Man" and you won't be wrong. The Mega Buster is a great addition but it doesn't fundamentally changes the way it plays.

But still does everything great. The platforming is tight, the enemy designs are as simple as are amazing (I love Skull Man!) and the music is as iconic as always (even …

What it really catched my attention about this game is the way it tooks inspiration on the soviet aesthetics for the (supossed villain). Dr. Cossack castle is made to resemble the Kremling, an the name of his daughter, Kalinka, is the same of a well known russian folk song.

enter image description here

I wish to know how the real world situation inspired the developers and the plot twist about Dr. Cossack not being really a villain, but manipulated by the real one.

As a final trivia, this game launched on Japan THE SAME MONTH the Soviet Union finally fell.

Reading you about playing Mega Man 3 made me go back to this one. I abandoned it when I was a child, tried again about 5 years ago and I think its time to finally play it to completion.

Let's see how it goes.

Charge buster kinda makes it so that I’m not really looking to use enemy weaknesses as much. Menu UI changed again, now it’s closer to the X style that I’m more familiar with. Another Good Mega Man Game

In playing through all the original Mega Man games, weirdly this is the one that was the most familiar to me. I wasn't a big Mega Man kid, but apparently I got my hands on this one and played all the levels, though I'm sure I didn't beat a single one.

I don't have much more to say about this one that I did for the previous three. I think it had less lag, which is good. By this point I think Capcom was just pumping out the games. They knew the formula, and they were good at what they did. They added the charge shot, which is good. Overall this game is good. Just a good game.

I feel good about this review.

Completed yesterday. Used lots of save states, tips online and various other tricks. Once I saw the ending I remembered something. I beat this game when I was a kid, without all my cheats. Was I a better gamer as an 8 year old?

A little bit of background, if you please. By the time Rockman 4: A New Ambition!!, known as Mega Man IV in the West, first rocked out in 1991, the Super Nintendo was already out and the Mega Man series was already beginning to show its age. Does that make Mega Man IV a bad game? Nah. But a predictable one? Well, for the most part.

As with AAA games, cheap Chinese food, and octogenarians, with Mega Man you knew what you were going to get: perilous platforming, robot bosses to steal weapons from, and of course the Blue Bomber himself in all his pixelated, 8-bit glory. IV met the familiarity of the Mega Man series with a few innovations. Chief among those was a gameplay addition that came to characterize the character for years to come. Players could now charge up his New Mega Buster.

In the previous three Mega Man games, our hero could only pop out a few pot shots. Not anymore. Now you could hold down the attack button as long as you like and charge up Mega Man’s arm-mounted cannon for a more devastating blast. Fans of later games in the series, and the reboot that began with Mega Man X, will be intimately familiar with this innovation but it first appeared here.

But no, you still can’t shoot up.

I’ve read elsewhere that several critics believe in hindsight that charging led to the deterioration of the franchise. It made the game unbalanced since weapons from robot masters were almost obsolete compared to a charged up Mega Buster blast. It changed the way the game was played, with less rapid tapping to fire and more knuckle-jumping. I don’t share their opinion.

Threw this cart in the old toaster NES and played with a friend for a few hours. We had a blast. Beat the robot bosses and half heartedly started in on Dr. Cossack's castle before he had to leave. The password has been written down. Plan for next time is stock up on energy and extra lives from Skull and Bright man stages and make a serious attempt at beating the game. Too bad the password doesn't save the number of lives and energies you have saved up but I recall last time I opened the cart there wasn't a battery...not that any megaman games had them.

People often say that megaman 4 was the beginning of the end for classic megaman games. Sure, maybe the difficulty isn't quite as high as previous installments and the music is not as legendary as megaman 2 but 4 introduced the mega buster which you can charge up for a powerful shot. There's Rush, the faithful side kick and Dr. Cossack is a new enemy. I think it's a great game.
