BioShock - First Impressions
I've actually played the beginning of this game quite a few times before and didn't really like it. I think that's partly due to being relatively inexperienced to games and also for being a child in terms of trying to look past to see what the themes of any particular game are.
That being said, coming back to it now was very refreshing. It's good, but similar to a game I also talked about today, it's good in spite of its mechanics. The base gameplay here is just as simple, you have freedom of what you can utilize but any particular action is point and click with very little dynamics between plasmids and guns. It's system shocky in that respect but the level design isn't particularly interesting and neither are the enemies, at least so far. System Shock definitely had a lot more to do at any time in terms of your options.
The aesthetics and story though are oh-so-good. Every radio bleeds the message the game is saying, every environment with its own story to tell, every chapter oozing fantastic atmosphere and pacing. It's a big great fuck you to Ayn Rand in every respect and I love it, a deconstruction of the libertarian's dream. So far it's been A+ and though I've been told the story flats out near the endpoint I can't wait to continue it at some point soon.
