From being an extra minigame to a super good game.

CDPR did an amazing job to bring such an amazing minigame to an entirely separate game for us. The gameplay isn't that new when we already have Pokemon TCG, Yugioh, etc. But because the story of the game is based on a famous novel and the feeling of battling NPCs with cards is such a great feeling. Also if not because of the success of The Witcher 3 then I certainly don't think Gwent wouldn't be that great though. Anyways it's up to you to decide whether Gwent is a good game or not, I personally think that Gwent is one of CDPR greatest achievements not just because of The Witcher 3 but the amount of passion they put in it.

Good design and good fun

I was pretty addicted to the mini game in Witcher 3. Part of that is because I almost always won, but I had to think about each match to do so. Going up against real people is a lot less fun because everybody only wins about half the time. Nevertheless, they did an excellent job porting and expanding the mini …

I was pretty addicted to the mini game in Witcher 3. Part of that is because I almost always won, but I had to think about each match to do so. Going up against real people is a lot less fun because everybody only wins about half the time. Nevertheless, they did an excellent job porting and expanding the mini game into a full fledged card game. Great animations, tons of cards, more complexity to the mechanics, more to learn, decent economy around it all. Its a great fit for iPad since it's so natural to manipulate cards with a touchscreen. I dropped off after a dozen hours maybe just because of the competitive aspect of it I described above. If they introduce a single player campaign the way Legends of Runeterra recently did, I'd come back to play that.

It's just not fun

I played this back in 2017 and decided to give it another go. They changed some of the weaker aspects (3 lanes, all gold cards untargetable) and added a more interesting progression system (Reward points).

I played this back in 2017 and decided to give it another go. They changed some of the weaker aspects (3 lanes, all gold cards untargetable) and added a more interesting progression system (Reward points).

Unfortunately this does not change the fact that the game is frankly rather boring. Every match takes 2 or 3 sets. You're stuck with the cards you start with, there seems to be little drawing. Interaction is rather limited and it can feel like you're two people playing Patience [Solitaire]. There's no combat, you can only play 1 card per turn and you only use 12-15 cards for the entire length of the match (which can easily take 10 minutes).

The game also still has a bad interface, crummy default filter settings in the deckbuilder (show unowned cards as the default?) and serious connection issues. Two of the three games i won were due to people losing their connection.

Oh god, and why did they get rid of automatic turn ending? You literally can't do anything after playing a card, what possible reason could there be not to auto-pass?
