This was one of the free games of the month on PS Plus. That’s about the only reason I gave it a try. This game seemed to be marketed more towards those hardcore Sonic fans with the ability to add your own self-insert fanfic furry into the game.

It’s kind of a fun comparison to make between Sonic Forces and Sonic Mania. This game is more for the new Sonic fans where Sonic Mania was built by fans for the fans of the Sega Genesis versions. I definitely enjoyed the older style of gameplay in Sonic Mania, and if I remember correctly most everyone else did too, as it sold much better.

The gameplay here is blink and you’ll miss it. Most of the levels are doing good to last a minute and it feels like you’re just getting started when the end gate appears. Save for a boss or two and the final few levels, they aren’t very challenging. It’s not hard to stay on the track and most of your input is just pushing forward on the analog stick. There is a little bit of variation where more skilled players can find alternate routes through the level, usually …

There is a little bit of variation where more skilled players can find alternate routes through the level, usually by using the homing jump ability. There are a few levels where you play as classic Sonic and they are laid out as such. These are some of the better levels as they seem to last a bit longer and there’s more of a platforming challenge here. The levels where you play as your custom furry are relatively easy. You get a powerful flamethrower to start with that can lay waste to any enemy you encounter. Honestly most of the gameplay seems to consist of watching cool things happen like swinging across giant chasms or running around a big loop. There’s also not a lot of levels. I beat this whole game in about 4 hours.
The world design is neat enough. They sort of did a mash-up on classic levels, Green Hills is now mixed with a sandy desert, Chemical Plant has a little Oil Ocean in there, and Casino World is now in a rainforest. Again, they are neat aesthetics. Heck, one boss battle is on the back of a giant snake. The graphics aren’t anything to scoff at either. It’s kinda weird seeing Sonic’s gloves being fully textured with a cloth like fabric. Getting screenshots for this game was a bear. One of my pet peeves, this game doesn’t pause the world when you hit the screenshot button, making it hard to get good shots and not die. This game also gets carried away with restricting screenshots in cutscenes. I’ve had a few other games have certain pivotal cutscenes be restricted from screenshotting, but this game thinks every cutscene is pivotal cause you can’t get any good screenshots of them, and that stinks for a game with a customizable player character.

The music is also a bit of an interesting oddity. They really like using songs with lyrics for background tracks, which works cause most levels last as long as an average pop tune. Some of them are a little catchy. The classic Sonic levels have instrumental backing tracks. It was also a neat feature that classic Sonic used the old school sound effects for his jumps and dashes.
One of the big selling points of this game is the ability to create your own Sonic animal. Depending on what type of animal you pick you get different abilities, which was a neat touch. I don’t have any OC Sonic character, so my custom animal ended up looking like Deputy Dog in a Mission Impossible jumpsuit. You unlock new customization options as you play through levels and complete certain challenges. By the end of the game you have a decent selection of clothing to play animal dress-up with. Once you beat the game you also unlock the ability to create a second custom animal. So if you like playing around with customization options you get ample opportunity to

Then there’s the story… I mean, yep. It’s weird and a little cringey, to use that overused word. You have these Muppet-like characters running a post-apocalyptic military talking about everything with total seriousness. They do have attempts at humor, but calling them attempts is being polite. Maybe it would’nt’ve hurt the developers to take a step back and realize they are making a game about a cartoony hedgehog that runs quick. The dialogue is all dry and trying to be deep. The only time it feels a little tongue in cheek is in regards to Shadow, who is meant to be the ‘edgy’ character. The over seriousness makes the whole game unfun to play. The first act shows Sonic “dying” and Tails goes mental, but Sonic is rescued the very next level, Tails stays shell shocked though. Also, when did Robotnik get renamed Eggman, never figured that out.

All in all, if you get this game free from PS Plus, it can be knocked out in an evening if you are starved of something to play. If you are a diehard Sonic fan, I’m sorry, and I reckon you’d be the audience for this game. I enjoy the greater challenge of Sonic Mania, even if it does raise my blood pressure.
Bad level design, terrible Classic physics, very fun Avatar levels and a lackluster story. Music depends on taste but I like them.
This game had so much potential and it all got wasted. Thanks Sonic Team. I had high expectations from this game and all of my dreams were crushed. Makes me sad to think this game could've been so much better, just like the Sonic 06 disaster.
I give it a 6/10. Worth a try. Just don't get your hopes up about the story.
There isn't anyone reason, for anyone to touch this game, unless they just insist on playing every game with Sonic.
Levels are the worst example of having long stretches of nothing since Sonic Boom. What's more it's devoid of a challenge even compared to easier sonic titles like Colors. Even if you fall asleep during one of the few times there is actually some sort pit there's constant checkpoints and unlimited lives, so you scarcely need to make any sort of effort to improve. Even scoring is devoid of challenge, I was earning A ranks while not even putting effort into collecting rings or avoiding the (practically non-existent) danger.
There is not even a single new mechanic, or even gimmick, to compensate for it's unengaging levels other than the character maker which consists almost entirely of cosmetic choices such as different hats/shirts to try on. Even the story is utterly boring: the old bad guy's from the other games return to get beaten up once again by Sonic and occasionally your mute custom character
What's more it is incredibly short, I've heard reports of people clearing it in 2-3 hours, but I couldn't stand to play it even for such …

7/10 - A solid experience with great ideas, but feels incomplete. Although what's there is well worth analyzing. Story-driven levels are nice, making avatars is the most thorough part of the game, though physics and the execution of levels needs work. Better off played in short bursts rather than a full-on epic experience as advertised
Maybe I'm alone in thinking this, but does anyone else miss the humorous and clumsy "jock" Knuckles from the Sonic Boom game and short-lived TV show? That version of the character is so ingrained in my mind when it comes to the Sonic series, that it's almost unsettling to hear the same character (with the same voice actor) play it straight and serious in Sonic Forces.
Though Sonic Boom as a game was mediocre (and that's putting it mildly), the character designs had so much more personality than most other entries in the series. I really wish they had still stuck with that style.
Sonic Boom Knuckles:

Sonic Forces Knuckles:

Me 2/3's of the way through Forces: "I haven't played Metal Gear Solid 2, but Sonic Forces should be like that instead."
My partner is playing Sonic Frontiers and she reached the first level with Retro Sonic. After asking why she’s playing as Sonic again immediately after creating her character she realized that some levels have you play as the player character while others employ Retro Sonic.
However the way she phrased it was “so sometimes you have to play as fat Sonic.”
Sonic Forces is extremely boring, repetitive and buggy as hell. The MC that you create feels so out of place and the "story" is just a waste of time, of course I wasn't expecting a TLOU but omg this was so boring that I gave up on it after the third or fourth cutscene. The levels are just 5 or so that are repeated again and again and again. I was about to finish the game when the save file decided to deleate on it's own. I guess even my PS4 hated this game. 1/5
Reached End Credits
Final thoughts: I had fun with this game, and I really enjoyed the inclusion of build-your-own Sonic OC. The game's aesthetics are stylized well both visually and musically (Fist Bump is a BANGER). However, there are a couple flaws holding this game back for me.
First off, I feel this is a game that can't even decide what it wants to focus on. For the overall theme, you have a serious war-themed story with Call of Duty styled orchestra music, but then you have Sonic asking if Infinite enjoys romantic beach walks with the most edgiest Sonic song to date. Also, why the heck was Classic Sonic added to this game outside of nostalgia pandering + Sonic Mania tie in? I felt the game would have a better focus if you cut Classic Sonic entirely, and have the gameplay focus like 70% on your custom avatar.
Second, these are like the EASIEST Sonic levels in existence. Modern Sonic stages are essentially 70% boost to win. While most of the levels are at least a visual rollercoaster ride, I would have prefered if the stages had more interactive elements like the …

While most of the levels are at least a visual rollercoaster ride, I would have prefered if the stages had more interactive elements like the stages in Sonic Generations. At the very least there isn't any pace-killing gameplay like Knuckles SA2 stages, and the stages are short -- maybe a bit too short.
Overall, I feel the game would be more well-received if it had a tighter focus, a bit more dev time, and probably a CGI budget on par with Sonic Unleashed.
... I still think my Sonic-OC is adorable...
Side Note: I did use Classic Sonic Improvement Mod
I am by no means a Sonic aficionado, so somebody will need to tell me why this game is so derided. It seems like quite a lot of fun and even I can see, as casual Sonic player/non-fan, that this game is packed full of homages to previous Sonic titles. I am genuinely curious, what's not to like about Sonic Forces?
For Christmas I decided to buy myself Sonic Forces and play through the whole thing (because why not). And you know? It wasn't nearly as bad as people made it out to be. Yeah, it feels like just a DLC bonus story for Sonic Generations... six years later... and by a different team that couldn't make 3D levels as well as the original team.
But still, I had a fun time, which I guess is what matters most. The "make your own Sonic character" thing, which I thought would be a complete gimmick, turned out to surprisingly be my favorite part of the game. And the new villain was basically Coldsteel the Hedgehog, but I found his over-the-top VA performance just delightful. Also, great soundtrack, though that's to be expected of most Sonic games.
Maybe not worth the full asking price since it's a rather short game, but if you can get it on sale (such as now) it's an entertaining little romp.
