Sonic No All Star Racing Transformed Bad

Hi friends!! 👋🥹

This is a honest take regarding the game. Let’s just say it right off the bat, it’s decent… 🫩

I grew up playing Sonic All Star Racing which I find to be the most enjoyable racing I have ever played and a masterpiece on its own accord, regarding unique abilities and ultimate [All Star] a big variety of characters to choose from / from other franchise games from Sega.

The announcer and the soundtrack and the maps were all amazing, the trailer for this game still beats 2025 modern triple aaa games itself.

Unfortunately the same couldn’t be said about it’s second generation [transformed]. transformed is a awful mess, while the game did introduce us to many new characters some which were totally unexpected or even necessary.. 😐

Like Wreck It Ralph, while I don’t mind the big man Ralph it would have been way better if (Vanellope von Schweetz) would have been chosen. Not does she only fit the game aesthetic, she came from a racing game itself while Ralph came from a donkey Kong rip off… 😫 Massive let down 👎 this was probably done to promote the movie more I guess no idea.

There’s tons of weird and unexpected characters coming in, And tons of characters removed from the original game WHICH I HAVE NO IDEA AS TO WHY YOU WOULD DO THAT!!! Important characters from its own sonic franchise like, Silver, Blaze, cream, rouge, weren’t even added in transformed. Heck they removed big the cat 😂

But characters aside. The only good thing about this game was the new maps which were good, the announcer was okay the only funny thing is when you go to setting to mute him he will say no please don’t and try to convince you to keep him, the transformed part sucked 😬 The transforming into a boat is alright to change scenery and all, but transforming into a plane is hell 👹 the plane thing isn’t smooth so you can actually drift well… but that’s honestly for all the vehicles in this game.. The character optimization sucks as well since Metal Sonic is just ranked nr1 as character, other character stats don’t even make any sense, some character you’d expect to be way faster but get awful speed stats.

Soundtrack is non existent in this game as well, nothing really that catches you, the same for the all star part, it’s super duper cheaply made, it honestly should have never been a all star game just a Sonic Mario kart rip off.

Visuals wise it looks fine nothing any different, out of personal opinion I don’t find the game fun or deserves the praise it gets.. I feel like more people grew up with transformed than the original game, So out of there nostalgia opinion the game is the best in the series 😪 out of all bitterness aside.

I only enjoyed the new characters, some maps, and that’s pretty much about it… menu and the ui of this game is awful it doesn’t even look like a racing game and it doesn’t feel like a racing game.

The original game had menu aesthetic of a actual racing game, while this one does not.. Hell the difficulty in this game is plain weird, easy mode is always a win since the other racers don’t even drift…

than medium somehow becomes expert and time to time is even worse than the actual hard mode, and hard mode itself is blatant almost always either 2 place, or you get screwed up by the other racers L.O.L or the map itself, with stupid swarm aka bees been spawned and you’d have to avoid all of them… and getting hit in this game is a massive slow down so trying to get number 1 is a pain, And I only suck at the airplane thing lol the boat and car is easy to catch up.

But I have had too many instances were you got hit as a boat or airplane where it took massive amounts of time to get out of the hit and than trying to make speed again and than actually being on your way again but at that point you are either 7 or last place already…

Let’s finish this review off with Sonic All Star Racing Transformed wasn’t the game you’d expect from such a masterpiece as the original. As where the original was something unique and way different than a Mario kart game which is why it was amazing 🤩

PS I am that review that you desperately wanted to hear after all that transformed praising 😂

Severely underrated

This game is really cool, hear me out. The “Transforming” mechanic of this game makes for some fun times and the graphics look great for a 10 year old game. Hell, they look great in general! And I love all the SEGA icons they included like wow! I really like this game and I hope you will/do too.

Should have been updated and streamlined

This game would have been much better if they would have trimmed out some of the nonsense trash. Such as; the traffic dodging tracks and are needed to progress the game. Would have been such a solid game if Sega would have just made a "cup" system like Mario kart, instead of the linear progression of tracks. More time should have been spent on track flow, this would have greatly improved the overall feel of the game; as many levels seem clunky and hard to maneuver around. The "Star Power" abilities are boring and should have been made to be more impactful. Visuals are great on PC and it's fun to play despite it's issues.

Split-screen fun assured

I was looking for a good arcade-style split-screen for simply having fun with accessible, quick games. This game perfectly does the job, it can provide 10 minutes of easy-to-go entertainment as well as 2 hours. There are too few local multiplayer games as spot-on as this one!

2nd Playthrough [replay]: Placed 1st in five Grand Prix cups in A-class and OutRun Bay

Final thoughts: I personally think this game is REALLY good, even when commonly compared to Mario Kart 7/8. While the driving physics and art style is still more refined in Mario Kart 8, Transformed just has a much more stand-out of an identity to me when this game is like a celebration of SEGA's history akin to Super Smash Bros. The track design (for the most part, screw you Chilly Castle) and music remixes are INCREDIBLE, and it's really neat to see nearly every track representing an entire different franchise, with Race of AGES being an amazing homage race to everything else.

However when this game is hard... it's very hard! S-Class is some of the most unforgiving AI I've tried to race against. Also, I do feel rubberbanding feels very noticeable in this game especially in A/S-class difficulties.

Random nitpick but I do feel weird how OutRun, an actual racing game, got shafted in this game considering it's only represented as a DLC race (meaning it's unplayable in World Tour), and I guess the Wii U exclusive Mii's car if you count it. I find this strange considering Sumo Digital literally ported OutRun 2 to consoles way earlier.

Beautiful but bad

I had no idea what this was, but it's Mario Kart with Sonic characters. The CGI in the opening cinematic is really good for 2012 and the game itself looks nice as well. The races have multiple paths with interesting obstacles. The transforming vehicles work seamlessly. It also runs in 4K.

Now for the bad stuff. The music is truly awful. The announcer makes me want to punch his face. The UI is dreadful, you have to go through 5-6 screens before you get to race. Easy difficulty is super-easy, normal difficulty is too hard in comparison. The third race is some godawful drifting thing that made me quit the game. I want to race, i don't want to drift. The racing itself is 100% arcadey, you don't really feel like you're racing in a car.

Worst of all, the controls aren't shown anywhere in the game - you have to launch the settings utility to see and change them. After i had changed the resolution to 4K and set the default controller to keyboard (without changing any controls), suddenly i couldn't turn right anymore?

Get a proper racing game like Dirt or Grid instead.

Surprise, this game is super fun. The races are fast, versatile and fun. Don’t miss it, it’s on Xbox Gold.

Tried to finish this game's campaign but couldn't do it. It requires a good portion of the game's missions to be completed at high difficulties, and after only gaining 16 stars within 3 hours I just gave up.

Playing this game again after a while has made me realize that I may've outgrown cart racers. The random, chaotic nature of games like this and Mario Kart is something I just don't find fun anymore; probably because I keep on losing to RNG.

It has everything you expect from a modern kart racing game. If you liked Mario Kart 8 you will like this game.

Must play if you are a Sega fan.

I got this packaged with a PS Vita and expected it to be total crap ( we all remember Sonic R, right?). However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this is a fantastic racing game. Now, I shouldn't be too surprised because Sega is also the only company to (in my opinion) make a good Mario Party copy (Sonic Shuffle), so I was very glad to see that they made a very good stand alone Sega copy of Mario Kart. There are some truly original modes like battle where you race, but everyone has three lives, a mode where you fight a tank, a slide race where you drift along lines to get extra time, a timed ring race (missing one ring doesn't get you a game over, it's great), and a beat the clock ghost race. Most of these modes are pretty inventive and I like them, except the last one. The ghost race feels cheap because you are expected to complete a better than perfect race in an insane amount of time, all while randomly gaining one or two seconds while your behind the ghost whenever the computer feels like it (you can lose some if you're in front, but good luck). All of the ghost races take place on tracks with shortcuts which you nearly HAVE to use (especially in 3-4 star mode) and I swear the ghost is going FAR faster than any car in this game should. I have noticed the computer cheating where they'll get hit and act like it didn't happen or you'll magically get hit by a projectile just as you hit the computer which constantly gets on my nerves. I've made it through most of the game just using Ulala, but I can feel it trying to force me to use a variety of other racers; I literally need to in order to win some of the BS races and I can't tell if this a good thing or a bad thing. Lastly, I was disappointed at the lack of levels, I started out being impressed when the first two cups had all different levels, but then got immediately disappointed when I learned that the 3rd cup and up were all repeats save for a few stages. What is also irritating is that they recycle the most mundane stages; instead of using the brilliantly lit All-Stars stage more than once it is only used one time, at the end of the game. The House of the Dead (while being a truly impressive stage) is only used twice and same can be said for the Burning Rangers stage and the Jet Set Radio Future stage. The level variety truly leaves something to be desired. The racers though are the high point of this game; I don't think there are enough from different series (there are too many Sonic racers), but I do like what variety they have. The racers stats can be modified by leveling them up and earning mods (including buying with stars earned from races console mods) and each racer has their own All-Star which is basically a super special that makes them faster, untouchable, and gives some a projectile; unfortunately, it seems Sega regrets their own decision because 98% of the racers have an All-Star rated of 1-3/5 which is kind of a boggling decision to me since this is something that this game has exclusively made on their own and I don't think it was bad one, so why make them crappy if you're going to include them? Overall, it's a fun game, if you can find for a decent price, get it and I think you'll have a good time.

Picked this up as one of my launch games for the Wii U. Initially there was a massive number of bugs/glitches, but after the first patch most of the issues were ironed out and great fun was all that followed.

There is lots to do from racing standard Grand Prix to the World Tour mode where you do individual events to gain stars and unlock playable characters. Both of these modes are fully playable in local multiplayer with up to 5 players.

The racing is tight, a bit closer to arcade racing than Mario Kart but along the same lines. Graphically the stages are nice and colourful, my only complaint was that I found the textures of the racers and their karts to be a little muddy. Sound, character selection and stage design are full of Sega nostalgia which was fantastic, though your average gamer is unlikely to recognize some of the more obscure games. Overall I've had a great time making my way through all the challenges this game has to offer. I've played through all of the events and am currently working on getting through them on Expert difficulty.

My wife and five year old son also greatly enjoyed this game. I don't know when the last time my wife and I spent so many hours working on a game together! My son, a junior gamer, has enjoyed this game immensely. Flying was tricky for him at first but the flight assist option was great!
