Players recruit squad members from various species and classes, forge alliances, and make choices that determine which characters survive. Combat features squad-based tactics with combinable biotic and tech powers, blind fire, and enhanced melee attacks. The game includes a cooperative multiplayer mode where up to four players fight waves of enemies to liberate conflict zones. Progress in multiplayer contributes to war preparedness in the single-player campaign. Annnnd, roll credits with a tear down my cheeks.

The ending is the culmination of literally years of gaming, of meeting friends, losing friends, wining wars and making peace. Bearing in mind the limitations of a videogame, Mass Effect delivers one of the best big-scale sci-fi stories of all time.

Yes, there are lots of legitimate complains, some of them small, some of the huge. But it would be impossible for such an all-encompassing plot, both of galactic proportions and people-scale, not to have rough areas.

Looking at the big picture, the Mass Effect series is a masterpiece of modern gaming.

The Mass Effect series is chock full of great character moments, but there's also some clunkers. My nomination for the day is Miranda shamefully confessing that she wanted to put a control chip on your brain but the Illusive Man stopped her.. which was THE THIRD THING SHE TOLD YOU ON THE SECOND GAME!!

Oh, boy, years after first playing it, ME3 keeps delivering. Resolving the quarian-geth conflict is one of my favourite moments. It's handled with complexity and pathos. There are a few dumb gamey moments, such as the reaper boss battle, and but the good stuff eclipses them with flair.

Meeting up with Tali as Femshep is so underdeveloped compared with maleshep (with relationship). Oh, how I missed the cute flirting inside the geth dreadnought.

Oh,man. I fucked up my playthrough. I forgot to visit the citadel between missions and now I got the coup without having spoken with Thane or Ashley. I missed so many good moments. 😭😭

It still annoys me a bit that player control during conversations is so impoverished, but Mass Effect 3 still manages to create deeply emotional moments at every turn. Mordin's scene in the Shroud still makes me tear up a little.

Damn, I really hadn't realised how much less agency I have in this game compared with the previous ones! Now Sheppard is flirting with Vega ("You're cute...") without my consent?

It's a bit of a shock coming straight from the previous games and realising how little control over Sheppard's dialogue I have. I'm probably wrong, but in the first game, I don't think there's a single line of dialogue that is not chosen by the player.

In Mass Effect 2, Sheppard does speak small snippets of dialogue without user input, but they are mostly reactions and other stuff in which there isn't any real choice anyway.

But in Mass Effect 3... oh, boy. Sheppard can have a whole conversation with emotional and character impact without any input for the player whatsoever.

The fact that there's even an "automatic" setting dumbfounds me.

God the multiplayer in this game is so fucking good. I've never played a multiplayer that I've enjoyed as much as this one

4.5/5 Renegade FemShep, played Omega and Leviathan DLC for the first time. Renegade dialogue makes it REALLY obvious how far the writing quality dropped between ME2 and 3. Omega was fun, and has some of the best aesthetics in the game; one of the problems with the Mass Effect series (especially after the first one) is how every indoor setting …

Omega was fun, and has some of the best aesthetics in the game; one of the problems with the Mass Effect series (especially after the first one) is how every indoor setting feels like it was ordered from the same Ikea catalogue. But Omega feels like Omega. Leviathan is the bigger WTF - this should absolutely have been in the main game and really fixes a lot of issues with the ending. Overall, the direction of the series is toward shooting and away from RPG/dialoguing which is sad but is what it is.

Finished. The final rush was pretty damn challenging and the revelations were thick and fast coming. I won't lie - I had a hard time even trying to understand it all which was a little jarring but it seemed compelling enough. I didn't need to add this game to my backlog but I am glad I did because I had an amazing time with it. I might play Andromeda eventually though I will be going into that with modest expectations.

Solid game.

I seem to be nearing the end - 26 hours in - but I don't know if I'm ready for the journey to finish. The game has such a cinematic feel to it that I am constantly blown away by the narrative and its branching paths. The depth of the characters is so well realised that I can slip into the Mass Effect world effortlessly. Mass Effect 2 and 3 have been some of favourites games I've played this year. Phenomenal stuff that I can see myself replaying in the future.

Ok, so I was further into the game than I thought. I got a few hours played today and enjoyed most of it. One thing I would have loved in this game was a way to properly track assignments so you can find people/aliens easily. It does give you a small description of where to find people and it is rewarding to track them down yourself but an option to guide you there would have been nice and made things a lot simpler.

13 hours in.

About 4 or so hours in. I'm hoping to finish this during my holidays if the allure of new games over Christmas don't turn me away.

I just love playing sequels and you can instantly see how the hud has changed, colours are tweaked and the gameplay is changed just enough to make it a more pleasurable experience. Looking forward to putting another 30 hours of my life into this franchise.
