Much like the original Darkstalkers, X-Men: Children of the Atom stands out to me in the ways that Capcom makes a new series near the heights of Street Fighter II's success, while also trying to do something unique within the fighting game sphere that isn't mimicking SFII too much.

As a massive fan of the Marvel vs. Capcom series, X-Men: Children of the Atom certainly feels like the first step in that franchise. Capcom does a fantastic job of fleshing out these X-Men characters, and making them all feel unique not only from one another, but from the other fighting games Capcom was making at the time. One of the best things about Capcom's fighting games at this time is how they make the big, bulky characters just as fun to play as the smaller, faster characters, which I usually tend to lean towards. There are also a lot of details here and there that feel integral to Capcom fighting games in the future, like how the special bar works, as well as the multiple screen levels, making it so you can jump up another screen, but also, break the ground and fall into another part of the level. It's an ambitious fighting game, and it's surprising they did as well as they did with this first fighting game collaboration with Marvel as they did. Thankfully, it would only get better from here, but this is still a pretty good place to start.

X-Men: Children of the Atom is basically a piece of history to me. It’s one of the first fighting games on the PS1 and definitely the first superhero fighting game of its consoles generation. It’s age REALLY shows, trust me. There’s no opening, the menu screen is basically blank, there’s no extras—it’s a very bare game, but again, it’s the first of its kind so I can definitely forgive that. The gameplay especially is what makes me wanna put it on a history shelf: the controls are painfully stiff, the move lists are extremely confusing—particularly when and how to perform certain super specials, there’s no in-game command list at all, the game in general just feels very slow, like a weight has been attached to each of the characters, and my God is the CPU unfair as hell. This is a fun, neat piece of history to be enjoyed with friends, or alone—if you have patience—and I recommend seeing where superhero fighters in the Sony generation started, but only pick it up if it’s cheap, I’m talking $20 max and it better come with an instruction manual.
