One Of The Better Mystery Text Adventures--But Still Not My Thing
Play: 7/10 What a complex parser! But possibly relatedly, overly wordy descriptions etc. especially in an era of more terse text adventures. Play: 7/10 What a complex parser! But possibly relatedly, overly wordy descriptions etc. especially in an era of more terse text adventures. It was quite interesting how complex the NPC behavior was too, searching for characters heh was both frustrating and impressive. In the end, no matter how impressed I was, like seems to be the problem with all mystery text adventures--I lost interest eventually, especially with how intricate and over-the-top they tend to be. After all, mystery writers and fans etc. seem to take pride on their difficulty more than their enjoyment heh... which makes sense considering the genre! Just not really the genre for me.
Feel: 8/10 I figured I wouldn't even play through this much since it's a mystery-type text adventure. Not that I dislike a Clue vibe (one of my favorite board games and movies, etc.), or solving mysteries etc (I used to read Encyclopedia Brown books as a kid), but I dunno... LaFore and Snooper Troops and other early mystery text adventures just weren't clicking. But this one, still too wordy, was more... well, fun. And straightforward. And I suppose more "realistic" largely due to the improved parser so you can actually say things that make sense and make you almooooossst sortttaaaa feel like a detective heh. I also kept getting Knives Out vibes, a movie which both my husband and I liked (which is rare, especially for a Hollywood/famous movie heh). How it was done, the mud clue, the will aspect--all rang a bell ha.
Attachment: 7/10 I do kinda wanna replay this to see if I can finish it, but that'll only be when I go in-depth replaying the better text adventures. This is certainly among the better ones, just not enough to get me to push through the mid-game frustrations and solving the mystery (even with some hints/clues from online). Still, a quality game, and must be played by mystery text adventure fans and mystery sleuths!
Completion: I know who did it, but hadn't compiled adequate evidence I guess! Playtime: 30mins
