I actually quite liked this game. Easy-to-pick-up gameplay but excellent application made for an enjoyable time and some challenging stages. I only really had two complaints.
First, I didn't like how you could play the stages out of order. It took away from what little story there was. Especially with the definitive edition, the extra content was enough to keep you entertained if you got bored of the main story; it didn't have to give access to future levels before you got there.
Second, a few of the levels felt like they weren't designed quite right. I say this simply because an ideal platformer will be set up in such a way that if you run through the level, you never lose momentum and can time all your jumps and moves perfectly. A couple of the vertical stages made wonder if that was possible, when losing momentum constantly made me unsure of what kind of jump Rayman was going to do. I feel like I should never question what's going to happen when I press a button. That wasn't always true. That being said, most of the levels had this nailed down, and running through the levels was entertaining and satisfying.
There is a ton of content in this game, especially if you get the definitive edition. If you're into pouring hours and hours into a game and chasing lofty completionist goals, this game is for you. The main collectibles in this game are little guys called Teensies (who were super charming and a ton of fun to find), whom you have to save from the bad guys in each level. I saved almost all the Teensies in each level, and by the time I beat the main story, I had collected about 350 of them. There are over 800 in the game. The rest are found in bonus levels, challenge levels, and throwback levels that I believe are recreated from Rayman Origins. I did some of these, but I do tire of 2D platformers, so I quit at around 400 Teensies.
Overall great game. I'm knocking off a star because of the story, the slight platforming defects, and the repetitiveness of some of the encounters, but it's still a top 5 platformer in my opinion, and the best non-Mario platformer I've played.
