FPS - The experiences of soldiers from three Allied nations—America, Britain, and the Soviet Union—during key battles of World War II.
PROS:
++ Sound design. By far the most impressive part about this game. From the get-go I noticed how great the sound effects were. Guns sound distinct, and felt powerful to use. The fantastic sound design really elevated the atmosphere of the game. There were a handful of moments in which I felt overwhelmed, hearing bombs explode and bullets whizzing past me. Made it really feel like a warzone (or what I would expect it to be like) which is quite impressive for a 2003 game. The best example of this is during the Russian campaign when the soldiers were trying to infiltrate Stalingrad.
++ Solid gameplay. Overall, I enjoyed the time I spent playing the first entry in the franchise. The gunplay didn't age too badly, and it still felt satisfying to land consecutive headshots. The enemy AI was also quite decent. They switched from prone to standing often which made combat slightly more dynamic. I also quite enjoyed the more challenging nature of this entry and it's due to the fact that your health doesn't regenerate. This made me approach and play the game slowly, and more in line with how a soldier would act: cautious and careful. I also appreciated the fact that you can lean in this game and pick them off from the safety of cover.
CONS:
-- Narrative. I understand it's an older game, and that it's rooted in real-world events, but the way the story was told did not manage to captivate me. None of the characters were that memorable either.
-- Friendly AI. Your squadmates can at times be decent at taking out enemies, but they often got in the way and blocked my sightlines. They also frequently blocked doorways and entrances, and were also painfully slow.
-- Gets repetitive. Unlike many future Call of Duties, there weren't many set-pieces and breaks from the regular shooting. Because of the lack of variation in gameplay, it got a bit monotonous near the end and that's not good because it's only a five hour game.
