A very long D&D game
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

A great D&D game, just way too long. I am not done yet! (3/3/03)

OK firing this up. Let's hope the QoL additions to the IWD:EE didn't spoil me, since IWD2 never got an Enhanced Edition.

I have gotten thru the goblin fortress, and have crashed with the airship. Now I need to clear out a whole town of bullied druids and rangers.

Some thoughts:

-Getting fireball on my Sorcerer has made so many combats and events easier

  • Rage on my barbarian seems to have minimal effect -I hate the way Power Attack works in general, but particularly in this game, as I am unsure how hard things are to hurt. I keep my Barbarian and Fighter constantly buffed with Bull's Strength, and then have them both power attack at 2, figuring that negates the boost to hit from Bull's Strength , but gets even more boost to damage. -Findings traps is annoying. They happen infrequently enough that I constantly forget to look, but frequently enough to annoy me AND they are often in super weird spots!

This game has a spectacular beginning! A town under attack, rallying the defenses either thru persuasion or force, then venturing out to scout and attack the orc tribes.

What this game, at least initially, has done so well is to get the player immediately invested in a high stakes, and fast paced story, but then provide several opportunities to explore noncombat options for your group's strategy.

Combat is challenging, but not overly so. The biggest barrier I have found so far is how quickly weaker party members can go from full health to death, with no easy way to bring them back. In the tabletop game there was an unconscious state, that then could progress to death, which would have made some of these sudden turns easier to deal with.

That said, saving frequently, and protecting your wizard and rogue goes a long way to solving this problem.

I played this a TON when it first came out but never beat it. I'm hoping for a break from some of the eternally long modern, open-world RPGs, and dive into some classic isometric goodness!

I even dug up my old strategy guide to help streamline my way thru the game if I get stuck.

Party is created and I plan to play this a good bit over the next few days
