I'm starting to regret buying a Series S instead of an X. It's a bit disheartening that within the first year of launch there are games that already need a Series X for even the most moderate performance. I post this under The Outer Worlds because it's a Game Pass game, but it only runs at 30 fps on the Series S. Similarly, I just learned that Yakuza: Like a Dragon, another Game Pass game, can only be displayed at 900p by the Series S. I'm not really asking for much, but the S can't manage 1080p. The worst part is that both of these are previous generation games. What will happen with games built for this generation in the coming year to two?
My solution for The Outer Wilds was to buy a PS4 copy so I could play it at 60fps on my PS5. I don't plan to purchase Yakuza: Like a Dragon for PS5, so I'll live with 900p. But it worries me that the Series S is not as futureproof as I would have liked. I didn't expect the full power of the Series X, obviously, but I did hope that the Series S would play games at 1080p given the X is designed to play them in 4K. I also don't expect the Series S to keep up the pace for the entire generation. But lagging behind this significantly in less than a year really stings. Maybe future games will be specifically optimized for the Series X and S and I shouldn't worry. Maybe it's just because these games aren't optimized, although Obsidian did patch The Outer Worlds for Series X and PS5.
