... In all seriousness this game is a lot of fun for what basically amounts to a free ad. If you have some time give it a look!

Hm.

This is hard to review. I rarely like Visual Novels, first of all. So that will explain this rating a bit. The game does do some cool things (though after Undertale and Pony Island the surprises aren't all that surprising). The problem is it takes so long to get to that. The first hour an a half are the usual VN fare of exhausting conversations clicking through endless dialogue with annoying anime girls. The destination is the selling point of this game, but it's not worth the journey.

Worth your 3 hours

Reading some of the reviews on here leave me mind boggled. Its alright to not like this kind of game, but to give it 1 star and call it crap is just you being edgy. This game takes the VN genre and flips it upside down and the fact that it is free is even better. It starts off slow like your typical VN game but it picks up and if you know what secret things to do some of the story is very well written

In one article covering the release of Doki Doki Literature Club, there’s a quote from the game’s creator, Dan Salvato, where he states that the inspiration came from his “love/hate relationship with anime”. This is a somewhat common phrase that people use when they love genre works and their themes but cannot allow themselves to openly admit it to maintain a pretense of maturity/intelligence/discretion/all the above. In this view, you are only permitted to appreciate genre if you maintain. I have been unable to find any further context for this quote and by all rights I cannot speculate that Salvato approaches anime and video games in this manner, but I can say that this is absolutely how DDLC approaches its originating material.

The first quarter of game plays out in strict adherence to what a non-visual novel player thinks a moe visual novel is like. Each girl conforms strictly to type — The Childhood Friend, The Shy Waif, The Tsundere — and are never allowed to be anything more. The result is an extremely dry read, a high school love comedy as if it was written by someone who neither went to high school …

The result is an extremely dry read, a high school love comedy as if it was written by someone who neither went to high school or has experienced human affection.

Then, the game eventually gets to its true beginning. The Childhood Friend suddenly withdraws, and you go to her room to check on her, where she confesses to you about her battle with depression. It’s a very bizarre scene, because it’s the first sincere moment in the game and reads very much like the account of a person with depression, but also because she talks as if she’s rambling off an explanatory article instead of opening up to a good friend. But no matter, you assure her that you’ll be there for her. In the next scene you find her dead by hanging in her room, in a scene so thoroughly contrived I laughed out loud at it. The scene where you discover her corpse hits all the notes of the body discovery scenes in the Danganronpa games, where distorted filters, jumping scene snippets, and simple eerie music are combined not just invoke tension, but to stylize and amplify it into borderline camp and reinforce just how tasteless and grotesque the whole killing game situation is. Here, in Doki Doki Literature Club, it’s supposed to be serious and scary. What?

From there the game pace mercifully ramps up but continues piles on the contrivances and phoniness. There’s a lot of filters, screen jumps, and garbled text that are intended to give the player the creeping sense that the call is coming from inside the game, but all these effects are clearly impossible to generate in-game and are deliberately added in development, pushing the player even further away from the game. (The exception to this is the broken text encoding and missing image layers, which are definitely possible in a game that’s glitching out and which I felt were genuinely creepy.) While the big twist is conceptually clever, it fails because it’s supposed to be the most intimate moment and yet the game has absolutely done its damnedest to completely distance you from it.

I was not sure on how harsh I should be with this game, because this is Salvato’s first game (his prior work is all in modding) and the failures here all come from novice incompetence. Going back to that article I linked earlier, though, Salvato mentions how he likes games which are disturbing through atmosphere, inviting comparison by name dropping Yume Nikki and Eversion, and not “[shoving] scary-looking things in your face”. It’s ironic that Doki Doki Literature Club ended up being the opposite of what he likes. In order, it is trying to be a creepypasta game, a parody of dating sim visual novels, and a look on disturbed people, and it completely fails at all of these. You have to be willing to truly love (whether this is loving anime, or loving genre, or loving character types) before you can exploit and explore that love.

Don't look it up

If you have 3 hours to kill play this. It's free on Steam. The first 45 minutes will seem boring. I assure you, it's worth it in the end. Just trust me. Don't look it up. Just play it.

Grammaring's review of Doki Doki Literature Club!

This game is no longer be the best in its class anymore. There are games that do horror better. There are games that get you more attached to their characters. There are games that make you interact with your computer's file systems in more interesting and meaningful ways. But, for me this was my first experience combining them. It made me think about how I treat games. I played it a month or two after it first came out. It was a defining moment in my gaming life, and so I can't give it anything less than five stars.

I guess I shouldn't have to explain why this game falls under the p̢̡̧̨͔̩̼͔̞̞s̴̛̝̗͉̣̞̰̟̹̲͟y̶̡̰̖͍͍̳̹̖̕c̵̠̬̣̭h̷͓̺̯̹͟o̵̙̩̹͈̝̩̬̻̠͟l̥̳̙͙̜̖̟͖͉̕͜ơ̢̙̮̗̜̬̘g̡͎͓͈̹̩͞͞i̘͖̝͔͍̩̕͘͢ç͚̣̬͈͍̹̻a̬̳̦̼͔͝l̷̖̠̼̹̤̠̠ ̧̗̤̮̞ḥ̛̥̘̙͈͟o͎̙̻̳͙̹͖͠r̷̨̪̗͓͉r̸̢̟̪̜̰͇̹͉̤o̷̖̯̲̤̭̯r̴̢̯͉̗̤͉̖̹ genre, assuming there are no preconditions for such a classification. This twist is what makes the game truly intriguing.

Discussing the quality of sprites or the background music would be pointless, as the game isn't about those elements. Although horror isn't my preferred genre, this game is a small masterpiece, and it can be completed in about 4 hours.

Rather than creating a typical dating simulator, Team Salvato (the game's creators) chose to take a different path and blow players' minds with Monika (I can't disclose more due to spoilers).

The most captivating aspect of this game is that you're not merely playing it; the game plays with you. The unique experiences you encounter in this game are unparalleled, and I can't think of any other game that has attempted to replicate such phenomena (I remember when I used to play on Windows, even my antivirus warned me about this game at the start, and believe me, there was a reason for it).

The story itself may not be particularly interesting and could be explained in just a few minutes, but it's the incredible …

There were moments when I was frightened to continue playing, yet I couldn't resist the urge to discover what would happen next. I even had to use my Bluetooth mouse and play from a distance of 1 meter (no joke).

Despite being a horror game, I highly recommend it to everyone (excluding those with health issues).

JopZ Review: DDLC

This is actually my first time playing a Visual Novel gameplay. I didn't know what kind of game this was, neither was I aware of what's in store for me so I guess I played the game without any expectations. I just happen to play this game because one of my friends recommended it to me.

GAME PLOT

The game plot is so direct that by actually reviewing it would already spoil you. So I'm just gonna leave you with an impression that if you want a chill but mind boggling game, this one's for you.

NOTE: I suggest that you don't google some of your curiosity of this game before actually playing it or if you're already playing it because it will totally spoil you of the rest of the game.

GAMEPLAY

There's really not much to do with this game. You create poems and the words you choose would determine who among the girls will get interested in you. It's just chill. I think there's some branching in the game as well, since there are some times you are going to make choices.

RATING

4 of 5 stars! This game is just worthy of recommendation. :)

Krauzer's review of Doki Doki Literature Club!

This game is a free-to-play visual novel that starts as a cheerful dating simulator but gradually evolves into a deeply unsettling psychological horror experience, it subverts traditional visual novel tropes, delivering a story that is both innovative and disturbing. I confess that this is the first and only VN that I've ever played, this genre never sparkled any interest in me, and I only played this one because of the hype surrounding it, a rare occasion, and I quite enjoyed it though I don't see myself playing any other VN in the future.

The game follows a high school student who joins a literature club at the encouragement of his childhood friend, Sayori. As he interacts with the club members, Sayori, Yuri, Natsuki, and Monika. The player engages in writing poems and building relationships, beneath the surface, however, the game introduces fourth-wall-breaking elements and explores themes of mental health and existential dread, creating a narrative that is as thought-provoking as it is eerie. I can safely say that, for the proposal of the story, using the VN format was absolutely the perfect fit for this title, I can even dare to say that it wouldn't work on any other format. …

This game has a bold storytelling and its ability to transform a familiar genre into a medium for psychological horror, in my opinion it rivals titles such as Silent Hill, despite it's "exotic" format. Its unexpected twists and meta-narrative have left a lasting impression on the gaming community. For people seeking a unique narrative experience that combines charm with genuine horror, this title offers an unforgettable journey that lingers long after the game ends. I highly recommend this for fans VNs in general, which I doubt they never heard of, but I especially recommend this for people who are not fans of the genre, since it can even make you fall in love with it, or at the very least, experience one of the best and most unique indie titles in gaming history.

Surprised Me Despite Warnings
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

The graphics aren't amazing or anything, but perfectly fine for a visual novel. Character designs are cute, backgrounds are serviceable, and the little details are cool (such as Monika having black socks while the other three have white).

There's a decent range of personalities for a four-character group. I liked Sayori fast, but Natsuki ended up kind of creeping up on me as an underdog favourite due to being the most 'normal' of the cast (and thus the least scary). I thought I'd like Yuri more based on her personality archetype at the beginning and her design, but MAN did she end up creeping me out more than I thought she would. Monika is iconic, obviously. The protagonist is pretty much a non-entity, but it turns out that's kind of the point.

There's not much to say about gameplay; it's a visual novel. Lots of reading, lots of clicking, some dialogue options and plot choices as well as different 'paths' for the girls. If you don't like visual novels, you probably won't like the gameplay of this, but I do, so I didn't mind it.

I went into this knowing it was a psychological horror and that Monika wasn't what she seemed, so I have no idea how much harder it could've hit me if I'd been entirely spoiler-free, but even with that, holy SHIT. I didn't know just how sudden it got - that first moment walking into Sayori's room and finding her hanging with the jumpscare and the distorted music had me YELLING.

I don't have too much to say about this game, partially because I think it's best experienced if you don't know too much about it so I'd rather not spoil too much that hasn't gotten out simply from the game's reputation. Given there is some intense subject matter, I wouldn't really recommend going in with no prior knowledge or expectations, so I think some general "spoilers" indicating that this isn't the cutesy dating sim visual novel it presents as and instead will include disturbing content are kind of important. But beyond that, I'd rather not say too much about the plot or events themselves primarily because I think my biggest issue with the game was that I probably would've appreciated it more if I didn't find so much of it predictable based on the many things I'd already heard about the game.

The good of it is I appreciate that this story was trying to do something pretty different. That concept has been done to varying degrees in other games since, but there is something to be said for the originality of this game coming out as it did in 2017. The good of it is I appreciate that this story was trying to do something pretty different. That concept has been done to varying degrees in other games since, but there is something to be said for the originality of this game coming out as it did in 2017. I feel like within those later instantiations I can definitely see some influence from this cult classic and it deserves some cred in that regard. There are also some really interesting and unique mechanics later into the story that I found really clever. Even aside from those clever moments, I think that if I'd gone into this game knowing basically nothing about it, it would've been a lot more effective as some of the ideas are implemented fairly well, to an extent.

And that "to an extent" is where I still ended up not crazy about the game. While it's not very long (Steam says it took me 4.8 hrs but I let it idle while making lunch and such a couple sessions so probably more like 3.5), the story employs a great deal of setup that is frankly super boring to me. You can expect a thoroughly cliche dating sim to start with involving an array of anime girl archetypes, all weirdly interested in your attention. I was warned of this ahead of time, but while I heard it was a struggle for the first hour, I'd say even after some of the initial twists kick in, the dull parts continue, in a new light or not, through a good 2/3 of the story and it really dragged. While the twists that eventually come were interesting conceptually, a lot of it starts to come off as melodramatic creepypasta. This wasn't helped by the fact that after all these years, I've heard this game hyped up so many times, it just couldn't really live up to what I was expecting.

All in all, I like what Doki Doki is going for and appreciated some aspects of that implementation. However, by the end I was fairly unimpressed and felt like the game has far more monotony than it needs. I am not someone who enjoys the cheesy dating sims this is deconstructing and perhaps I would've appreciated the first parts more if I were, but I still think the game could've been cut in half with very little lost. I can at least say I think this game will remain an interesting bit of indie game history and as much as I didn't enjoy it much, I can see how some of the ideas it plays with earned its cult classic status.

Agora eu termino a análise, juro. Só quero dizer algumas coisas:

  5. Agora a última anotação que eu PRECISO dizer: JUST MONIKA, meu parceiro.

Spooktober (?) game (?) #6 Completed (?)

This one will be hard to review later so I'll be especially brief here. I liked it okay. It was better in some ways than I expected but definitely feels like one of those games I would've at least appreciated more if I hadn't already heard so much about it. Hard not to feel it was over-hyped at this point, so I wasn't too crazy about it overall. On the plus side, a quick and easy game to help me catch up on my goal for the month.

Amazing numbers for a visual novel.

I wonder if this is the best example of a game being completely free, and then doing that well with selling an updated re-release? Ah, I still need to write my review for this. One day, one day. It's probably the most recent game I've played that likely cracked my "top 10," if I ever dare attempt a defined list for that. At the very least, it's likely #1 for most pleasant surprise, since I went into it with low expectations.

A great psychological thriller. Most of the fun was actually watching let's-plays of it after I finished it and seeing other people's reactions. Also, watching the Game Theory YouTube episodes gave me a much deeper interest and understanding of the lore. Overall, a brief, yet extremely well-crafted game with tons of depth to discover.
