I appreciate Twin Snakes for offering a different experience from the original game, but I enjoyed it less. The cutscenes are way too over the top. They change the tone of the scene and are often distracting. I liked the OST less and some line delivery is not as strong. I think the controls are a bit tough to get used to, but that's because they had to workaround the Gamecube's limited buttons. MGS2 mechanics were added without considering how it would affect playing MGS1. I've seen most people online critique it because the first person aiming makes stealth trivial. If you try to play the game without cheesing it, it's immediately obvious that the MGS1 level design doesn't compliment MGS2 NPC sight and hearing. Dog tags feel pointless. It felt like they were added because MGS2 had them. In MGS2, dog tag progress is at least tied to unlockables, but that isn't the case in Twin Snakes. To end on a high note, I'll talk about the things I liked. I liked the story and I still find it engaging. One MGS2 mechanic that was a welcome addition is the ability to shoot cameras to make some areas less of a pain in the butt. Not needing to equip the security cards is convenient. Adding the PSG1-T is another welcome addition, if only to save a little bit of time with backtracking. Overall, I'd much rather replay MGS1 on PS1 than come back to this remake, but I'm glad I finally finished a playthrough after all of these years.
