Ether One is a first person adventure that deals with the fragility of the human mind. There are two paths in the world you can choose from. At its core is a story exploration path free from puzzles where you can unfold the story at your own pace. There is also a deeper, more adventurous path in which you can complete complex puzzles to restore life changing events of the patients history in order to help the validation of their life. The choice is left to you. Welcome to Pinwheel. The aim of the parallel paths was to make Ether One accessible to a range of skilled players. The hope was that people would be able to enjoy playing the game and solving puzzles with parents or friends, as well as immersed in the game on your own with the lights off. From a young age we enjoyed the first person puzzle games that required you to write cryptic notes on spare pieces of paper to unravel mysteries. Ether One aims to bring back pen and paper puzzle solving, whilst still being accessible and optional for people not wanting to get stuck and frustrated on the harder puzzles. Read less

I was pleasantly surprised by Ether¹ and was puzzled by the low scores and unenthusiastic reviews, now and at the time. I had no expectations going in, and it was free or charge, and compared to a lot of other walking sims / indie puzzlers I thought it showed heart in its presentation and story. I was adamant in completing it 100%, to find all the Knockers and Reels, and apart from a few glitches and some frustrating navigational issues, I had a great time figuring out puzzles and searching for collectibles.

Controls and UI are smooth and self explanatory, the places you visit and the nature you traverse are carefully designed and felt real to me. The game can be spooky at times, you know, liminal spaces and all that...sometimes a feel of exploring an empty server in a dead online game. Ether way...hehe...just play Ether¹. No need to move it up your back log or anything, but give it the chance it rightfully deserves.

Played the first couple hours. This thing is horrifically dull. I couldn't imagine a more boring or lifeless story, world, and characters.

And I love a walking simulator. Just not this one.

Mayne this is just not my type of game, but I just couldn't do it, couldn't keep playing. First, I couldn't keep going because something happened to my save file and my game won't load. I already spent almost 4 hours in the game, and I really don't want to go through it again. So no, I haven't played the whole thing. Nevertheless, I got a grasp of how the game feels. I thought it was nice in the beginning, something about working with the memories of people with health issues. That's ok with me. The music was nice, and it started pretty good. Then things started to get a little annoying. Like for example, you walk so slowly! The puzzles are way too hard or don't make sense. I had to play with a guide and most if it just didn't make sense to me. The pace is just too slow for me. In my opinion, if in order to play and beat a game you have to use a guide 90% of the time, then it has failed. Probably I failed too... we both failed.
