hevanlyy's review of Cult of the Lamb

Look, we all know that I am never thrilled about a town/resource management game. So when I saw this, I was appropriately skeptical. Little did I know, being the leader of a cult is something that I am exceptional at! (actually we all knew cult leadership was always going to be a forte of mine, but my extreme dedication to lovingkindness has always simply prevented it!) And obviously the roguelike/dungeon blaster parts were super helpful for my particular brain that absolutely can not do too much town management and needs a break from handling my cult members! Because it turns out that cult members are very needy and you have to keep them happy. Which again, I am good at, but it is rather draining. Anyway, all in all a great game!

This is not the best 'roguelike' action game out there. It cannot compare to Hades or The Binding of Isaac.

This is not the best town management sim out there. It cannot compare to Animal Crossing.

But when we're talking about mixing both genres, oh boy. This works like a charm. Gameplay is really basic, but the pseudosatanic atmosphere combined with the cute animal characters is great. You can read my full review in spanish here.

It also has a lot to say about the way cults and religions see their followers. I don't the devs tried to give this message on purpose, but it was inevitable when you touch this kind of themes. Cult of the Lamb does what Far Cry 5 doesn't. 😂

Cult of the Lamb: A Memorable Oddity
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

Cult of the Lamb, developed by Massive Monster and published by Devolver Digital, is an indie game that offers a unique and engaging experience. With its charming hand-drawn art style and darkly humorous narrative, this game stands out in the indie gaming scene.

You play as a devoted cultist in a quirky world of anthropomorphic animals who worship a malevolent lamb-like deity. The gameplay combines dungeon crawling, base building, and resource management, offering a mix of strategic combat and camp expansion.

The game's humor, absurd rituals, and whimsical characters create an endearing and amusing atmosphere. Its audiovisual presentation is equally charming, with a blend of unsettling and delightful elements.

Cult of the Lamb may not be for everyone due to its peculiar theme, but it's a captivating and memorable addition to the indie game catalog. If you're in search of a unique and engaging gaming experience, give Cult of the Lamb a try.

I had a really great time with Cult of the Lamb! From the farm-sim style cult management to the roguelite dungeon crawling to the demonic visual theming of the whole game, it was a blast.

I think I ended up taking a bit longer than most people at 21 hours for my playthrough, but I don't think I went above 15 followers until I was required to for the final ritual so that probably slowed down my cult's growth a good amount. I was having too much fun managing the cult and building stuff to do all that much dungeon crawling until I started running out of stuff I wanted to build.

I found the difficulty maybe a bit on the easy side, save for the third major boss, who kicked my ass real bad for some reason. But the combat kept me on my toes enough for me to never get bored of it. The dungeon crawling aspect was very fun, though I kept getting stuck with the claw weapons for my runs, which I really hated using because I wasn't a fan of the three-hit combo they did. The dungeon crawling aspect was very fun, though I kept getting stuck with the claw weapons for my runs, which I really hated using because I wasn't a fan of the three-hit combo they did. It's random chance which weapon type you get and I'm pretty sure I didn't so much as see a sword for the last two main areas of the game. It was all claws, daggers, and hammers for me. Just bad luck I guess. Loved the daggers and hammers though.

Another thing I loved was the game's aesthetic, which makes sense given I'm a big Binding of Isaac fan I guess. It just oozes personality and everything looks so crisp and vibrant. Pretty much everything you do in the game is also accompanied by very satisfying sound design and fun animations that just make interacting with the world and your cultists feel worthwhile, even if only for the sheer enjoyment of it.

I think my one complaint (if I had to have one) would be that I felt like things started to drag a bit near the end for me, as upgrades began to feel superfluous and not really worth getting outside of checking off a box on my list, but I'm willing to chalk that up to me being too slow to grow my cult's size early on. I'd bet the progression feels a lot smoother when you focus the dungeon stuff a bit more heavily than I did.

Again, this is a really fantastic game and I can't wait to see what the team behind it does next!

Cult of the Inc!
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

My cult was a little to needy for my liking. But on reflection it is a little fascinating how I went from carefully customising each member at the start, and caring when they died, to just seeing them as a stepping stone towards the ultimate goal by the end.

I'd have sacrificed the lot of them. I'm not sure how much of this is the game and how much is me!

Anyway, Cult of the Lamb was a lot of fun, even if performance suffered. I do feel it finished just at the right time before things got too repetitive. And I got far too rich once everything was unlocked.

But the end goal was engaging enough to keep me plugging away. If you don't mind more than a bit of village management with your adventuring, I'm sure you'll like this too.

Don't join this cult

Want to play a game made by devs that hate you? Hey, at least it's on theme. I haven't played a game that showed so much promise and yet squandered it through poor end game design choices quite like Cult of the Lamb. But if you're looking for a game that makes beating the final boss the worst decision you could possible make, do indulge yourself.

Normally I'm more generous with indie games, especially ones that are flawed yet have great ideas. But I don't think I've ever felt quite like all my time was squandered by a game designed to slap you in face at the eleventh hour. What a waste of time.

Update: I'm trying to put things into perspective. Despite my disappointment, I don't think the devs meant to be malicious. This game is fun, and has great things going for it, but the post-game might not match people's expectations and it took me by surprise. Read the thread I linked to above for more context and my attempt to negotiate my feelings about my experience with Cult of the Lamb.

A cute, well rounded indie

Mixing Hades with Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley seems like an absolutely great idea, and it actually is!

I suppose the whole design of this game is a little top down from this idea. The central narrative theme of building a cult as a sheep works great with that as well.

Cult of the Lamb shines in two things: general idea and art direction. The game simply looks great, yes, it's the classical cute-look, but combined with the dark theme it has a burlesque, Alice in Wonderland-esque touch to it. The idea of the gameplay mix is great, the gameplay itself is a little too straight forward.

It does not do any grave mistakes in the different gameplay meachnics in which it is branching out the more you progress throughout the game. It executes them professionally, but neither the base building nor the character relations nor the roguelike aspect really shines.

Especially the combat in the roguelike run and the progression system for those runs almost feels a little dull. The weapons and tarot cards don't feel meaningful at all. I liked the fast paced quick combat at first, but without a proper meaningful progression system it feels superficial quickly. …

For me, the roguelike combat is still the most essential part about this game and it's average at best.

A well rounded, good game though, most definitely.

Boy, Running a Cult is a Lot of Work

Cult of the Lamb is Rollercoaster Tycoon except instead of an amusement park you're running a death cult (with, ironically, fewer deaths by drowning), and instead of trying to make a profit you're trying to earn your cult members' devotion so you can build more buildings to support a larger cult to earn more devotion so that eventually you can make a profit and I'm not even joking. But also if you earn their devotion inside of the temple instead of outside it fills up a different bar and that's the one that gets you upgrades for the other part of the game which is the rogue-lite dungeon run.

But don't worry about that part, you'll only be spending about 20% of your time there. The rest will be spent cleaning up shit and vomit and trying to figure out why feeding people barely fills the hunger meter given that while you're queuing up the meals to cook it shows the hunger meter filling all the way up. Although actually, unless (I assume) you're playing this on PS5 or a gaming rig, you'll be spending most of your time waiting for your list of followers to load. Or else just …

Although actually, unless (I assume) you're playing this on PS5 or a gaming rig, you'll be spending most of your time waiting for your list of followers to load. Or else just ignoring half the game in order to avoid that.

It's kind of a mess, is the point, with a solid handful of good ideas executed very poorly, and another solid handful of bad ideas also executed poorly. And this is both for the management side and the combat side, where only two of the weapons are actually any good and combat is frequently so illegible that I will literally not know what hit me. Also at one point they introduce a new enemy with a projectile that you have to deflect back at them a la Ganondorf in Ocarina of Time but at no point have they explained that that's a thing you can do, and also most of the time it isn't, so the first time you meet this enemy you'll just be running away from this projectile (it's a homing projectile and quite fast) while trying to get in heavy attacks against what you assume is a shielded enemy because your regular attacks don't do anything, and then you'll die. And then the 2nd time you'll attack right away to try to get in before the projectile launches, thus accidentally parrying it and then immediately destroying the enemy, but you won't have any that that's what happened so it won't be until the third time, if you're lucky, that you finally figure out what you're supposed to do, at which it actually becomes pretty much trivial.

Ultimately while the progression had its hooks in me for a while, once that ran out I was left with a mostly unenjoyable and tedious gameplay loop, so when I had the opportunity to end it all I took it gladly. By which I mean I sacrificed myself to The One Who Waits and rolled credits so I could consider the game done.

p.s. the music is great though, especially the Darkwood theme and the end credits theme, I love the vocal-samples-as-instrument thing, and it fits the mood of the game really well too. Honestly I think the music carried me through the first 75% or so just as much as the progression system.

p.p.s. On the in-world game list I'd say Knucklebones ranks in between Gwent and Machine Strike. While I like its simplicity I never felt like I understood it at a strategic level (despite winning fairly consistently), so Machine Strike is more satisfying. But Orlog is still more fun. Gwent can still suck my ass. Though that reminds me, did I ever rank Roach Race? I think I'd put it in second, actually, it's a little longer than it should be but that length is a direct result of being good at it so it kind of works.

I might need to start making an actual list of these. I mean Caravan should be on there somewhere, surely. And probably some others I'm forgetting.

Enjoyable for me as a first-time roguelike player
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

There are undoubtably some great things about this game, one of which is the aesthetic. The adorable, yet somewhat dark and unnerving, art style is what attracted me to the game, and it did not disappoint. Every new character that is introduced through the main story is visually interesting, and this was enough to keep me engaged even during the more menial elements of looking after my cult. The music also complimented the game well (although when playing for long periods of time, I did end up turning the music off and playing more relaxing Animal Crossing music on Spotify instead).

While I would agree with other reviewers who found the combat fairly easy (depending on what difficulty you play on), it was perfect for me as a person who had never played a roguelike game before. The combat was not as enjoyable as in some other games but I found that I could get through one area pretty quickly in order to encounter new enemies. For a game that cost me £20, it was definitely worth the money.

Game #66/225

Cult of the Lamb stands out to me as a worthy successor to Isaac (my favorite game), and not in an "Isaac 2" kind of way, but as a redevelopment of its basic formula into something very fresh and new while still being authentic to many of its principal mechanics and design philosophies. What is most fascinating about the game, besides its "farming simulation" component intrinsically, is how it maintains its roguelike genre status by encouraging repeated playthroughs and incremental progress without the core mechanic involving death. Yes, death will happen and you can increase your meta progression that way, but in general, CotL involves going on "micro runs" (they're never labeled that, but it seems odd to call the sub-10 minute laps "runs" after playing games like Isaac and Darkest Dungeon II where you can be stuck on a run for an hour or more) in which materials are collected and rooms are completed before encountering a mini boss, after which you simply return to your encampment. There is a constant dopamine rush from building your cult, with a number of "unlockable trees" present that are linked to your actions and progression is a couple of areas. …

There is a constant dopamine rush from building your cult, with a number of "unlockable trees" present that are linked to your actions and progression is a couple of areas. The game provides so many types of tasks and collectibles that you are really constantly managing something. But the rewards provided are so immediate and satisfying (not unlike a Survivors-like TBH) that you are always buzzing around looking to do more tasks. There are also other areas to check out with NPCs, some secrets, and more various tasks and side quests. To summarize, the game packs in a LOT of content that is not unlike a ~10-hour sugar rush.

I'll mention that the music and art are also phenomenal. Besides that, the gameplay core is solid with a pretty basic top-down hack-and-slash style. I found that it was a bit hard sometimes to determine where an enemy was attacking, but other than that the attacking is crunchy and satisfying. There are plenty of weapons, relics, and sub-weapons, but not an abundance. It's plenty fun smashing through obstacles and killing monsters as you progress -- but nothing groundbreaking. The main appeal, I think, is everything surrounding this core gameplay loop, which is even evident as you choose your path to the boss: the majority of options are non-combat areas where you can get lumber, or gain a new follower, or buy from a shop, etc. I strongly recommend CotL as a fresh vision on the roguelike genre that is greatly in touch with what makes these games work mechanically.

So thou art the creature causing the ether of this world to ripple and warp.
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

Delightful hybrid genre game, with town creation sim (think Stardew Valley) mixed with adventure rogue-lite dungeon crawler (The Binding of Isaac). I was not aware of this fact before playing, but as someone that is a big fan of the former, and not so much of the latter, found myself very much stuck in the gameplay loop of balancing both and to have to improve my cult life conditions as I improved my combat skills and weapons.

It made for a very enjoyable time, in a game filled with great design and locations, which you can feel the love poured behind them.

It has some difficulty spikes and you can continue to play after you finish the main story, to make your cult the best it could be, while exploring more of the world. I decided not to do it, since although it was for sure a nice experience, I did not feel wanting for more.

Roguelite mezclando con base building, una combinación muy adictiva a la que se le suma un gran apartado artístico y mucho sentido del humor. Aunque le falta una mayor profundidad en lo que presenta y pulir un poco el combate, resulta innovador y divertido.

the base building is kinda cool albeit somewhat tedious at times. the actual "roguelike" combat / dungeon crawling feels pretty bare-bones though - doesn't feel like i'm making any meaningful choices or having to change up my strategy of "hit things until they die while not getting hit," though that may be just because games like hades have set the bar way too high.

the artstyle, animations, and music are all REALLY good though, so if you value stuff like that much more over consistently interesting gameplay than i can definitely recommend this

I wish this cults Kool aid tasted better

The game mixes farming/village sim with dungeon crawling elements. I personally don't think it does either very well and doesn't innovate in either area.

The game really shines in its presentation, it is extremely adorable with cute graphics and nice effects. The flip side is that the game is extremely dark in contrast with its presentation.

I feel like calling this game a roguelike is kind of a stretch. Each area is so self contained and you keep so much as permanent upgrades, and your power level generally grows that it doesn't really feel like one. But that's not really a problem. The problem is that doing dungeons is kind of boring. They are very repetitive, enemy variety is very minimal, there are 4 weapon types that play very similar, they just do different amount of damage. You have "variety" of effects on weapons but they amount to poison, do Crits, chance of healing, create an extra missile and that's it. The chance of trigger this bonus is so small they play almost the same. Synergies between your weapons and stuff you find during the run are almost non existent. There is nothing that you get and go "wow this …

There is nothing that you get and go "wow this is amazing, this is gonna break the run. Everything is very meh. Controls are not tight and feel floaty, hit boxes are all over the place.

Jumping to the farm simulator side of things, I probably enjoyed this part more than I thought. The problem is that the interesting upgrades for your cult are really easy to max out and then you are left with upgrading buildings, but the more you have the longer it takes for the next upgrade and eventually there is not much to do on your cult. It is not an area you can focus on, there is a lot of waiting and sitting , it can't even be considered a break from dungeons as there is so little to do. And it also gets to a point where your village is so automated you really have no business doing anything manually.

I wish there was more to do on this aspect and I could focus on it if I wanted to.

The game loop is also not obvious at first, and the game introduces way too much stuff at once and it takes a few runs to figure out how all these components interact. It initially looks like a deep system but in reality is just a convoluted system.

Overall the game has some cool ideas but nothing is implemented in a meaningful matter. All these elements need more time in the oven. I do hope we see the evolution of the game.

If you can find the game on a sale and you are curious definitely give it a try, just don't expect too much like I did given the chatter online and you will have a decent time.

First time I played it was when it was released and it was fun of sinister cult, Binding of Isaacesque dungeon crawling and animal crossing. When it came as a part of PS Plus last month (AUG 2024) I tried it for a second time. All the improvements I saw they implemented since the first release put a positive spin on the game. There are more things to equip when going out to fight in the dungeons. Also, in your cult (village?) there are more things that can happen.

All in all, it was cool, and it's even better after the updates.

It's kind of frustrating that I have to grind all four areas again, in order, just to be able to farm silk again. as a result, I can't build any advanced structures despite having plenty of gold and base resources. It kind of puts a damper on the idea that I was going to have fun just focusing on my cult in the post-game.
