If you got this for free from Epic back in July and haven't tried it yet, this month you can get free DLC just by logging in twice.

Honestly, if you got this for free it is worth trying out just to see the pretty environments they made.

So if you got this for free now is a good time to try this game because there's a free ESO Plus (subscription service) trial until wednesday (2/8).

Despite my disdain for MMOs i'm actually kinda enjoying this. If this was a normal single-player game it would be top 50 at least.

Visually, the game is consistent, but that consistency is boring and drab. The game itself is punctuated with exciting moments, but overall it's just above average and I have a hard time recommending that. If you're a big Elder Scrolls fan, give it a try. If not, there are better choices out there.

It's time I got back into ESO. The last time I played, the only major DLC that had been released were Imperial City and Orsinium. I'm excited to see what's changed and to try the new DLC.

I wanna say it's a Glenumbra thing because it's just not a super interesting locale like a desert or Orc-owned island is. Glenumbra is also like 10x bigger than both previous locations I visited. Also figured out that I can't solo a group dungeon at level baby, no matter how many times I throw myself at a big ol spider. Almost did though, cheesed the first boss, then the 2nd boss I couldn't find a place to cheese and got stuck in a wall after it sent out 15 million adds.

In other gaming related news for me, I got a VR headset and it's pretty sicknasty despite my PC being right on the edge of recommended SteamVR specs. GeForce Experience tells me I'm good tho, so I figured I'd send it. Half-Life Alyx is incredible, but unfortunately the only room where there is enough space and my glasses don't fog up is in use right now, so I guess I'm back on ESO.

Dear Grouvee, please have a pop up when you back out or close the window telling you that you will lose progress because my dumbass just closed the window on a fairly long status update. Idiot proof it for idiots like me plz.

Anyway, I've spent 30 hours in ESO now, here's the positives

  • Combat is probably the best in an Elder Scrolls game. Melee especially. Light Attack Weaving/Animation Cancelling has my name written on it.

  • Artstyle is nice, decidedly Elder Scrolls, but textures are muddy, even on Ultra.

  • Nice details with NPCs and other world building things make explorations fairly fun. You move slower wading through water which is such a weird nice touch. Movement speed is also very comfortable. Not as much fun to explore as Skyrim's simulated world/dungeon-palooza featuring Mods from the Devil May Cry Series, but it be like that.

  • Quest Design is miles beyond Skyrim's radiant quests and honestly most of its regular quests.

Overall, I'd rather have had a co-op mode for Skyrim, I think, but ESO is a really great experience so far, once I really got started. Unfortunately I don't have any friends playing lol.

Has a decent bit of exploration, the quests seem at least a little more interesting than "go kill 10 wolves because I hate them" but not as interesting as say... Oblivion's Dark Brotherhood. So better than Skyrim or Fallout 4 as far as quest design goes lmao. Exploration isn't as exciting as Skyrim, but still pretty decent for an MMO. TBH the only other MMOs I've played are Star Wars The Old Republic and Runescape. So uh... Not much to compare to, Runescape is definitely not my cup of tea anymore, now that I can afford games and free games are much better, and SWTOR had an excellent story but had you overleveled for the zone if you even did any of the side quests by the time I played. So I stopped doing them.

So, kinda weird that you have to go out of your way to start the main story if you have any of the big DLC installed but whatever, it's easy to start. Also I made my character way too short or everyone else is way too tall but whatever. I'll just pretend I'm a Hobbit.

This had been one of my favourite MMOs for a long time, but recent updates have caused the game to run so badly that events have been cancelled, and key features of the game no longer work as they should.

On top of that, the community is an unfriendly and unwelcoming place as of late. Certain guilds seem to rule the roost and the server as a whole is filled with drama, with the "loudest" players making it a very toxic place to be as an Xbox EU player.

If you go into this fresh, I would suggest taking friends or playing it as a single player game if you want a pleasant experience, as you may find it hard if you're not willing to really dig in and search for a nice guild.

There are interesting quests sure but its really not worth it in the end. I know this is prob just the thing about mmos so I'm not hating on it too much. It just doesn't have much substance after you've played the faction quests and the mains story. So maybe it's worth it just for those for some people but not for me.

Gameplay: 3 /5 Story: 3.5/5 Presentation: 3/5

Basis:

Story= plot progression, intrigue, characters, world

Gameplay= Mechanics, gameplay options (freedom), repetition, goals, difficulty

Presentation= graphics, animation, environment/character design, Art direction, Script, music

I will say my scores for the game aren't super accurate as I didn't delve too far into the game. I tried out dungeons, questing, PvP (Battleground), crafting, and joined a guild. My "main" was a Nightblade which essentially is a roguelike class that is good at sneak attacks. I played them as an archery focused class and my max level attained was level 29. I did try out other classes as well, but didn't level near high enough to have anything to say about them The game was fun for a time and then I felt like it fell back into the same rut that most MMOs, especially well-established ones with multiple expansion packs, fall into where there is just way to much content and it takes a long time to experience it all and after a while the journey just becomes lackluster.

The gameplay is faster paced than WoW, which is way a base most of my comparisons, based on the amount of movement required to avoid enemy mechanics. The fact that it is developed in such a way where you can look in the First person, as well as Third, is a cool way to switch it up. It also can greatly help your accuracy as where you aim really matters in this game more than WoW. The controls at times felt hard to control, but maybe with more time, I would have become more accustom to them. Battlegrounds were really tough to even hit people in just because with so much movement and a reasonably small target in the zone to use a lot of my abilities was pretty challenging.

The quests were at times quite fun with actual voice-acted dialogue and unique personalities. I did feel like the main quest that I started with felt more burdensome than a lot of the more quirky side quests which didn't encourage me to keep playing. I can't say much about the story mainly because the nature of MMOs is that there are many stories which can vary in quality throughout the game. Overall there was a feeling of needing to know some background on the ES universe to understand who some people were and how serious some conflicts were.

As for the presentation the game had nice graphic detail, but not much graphic style. It wasn't as colorful as the artworks depict and the majority of locations felt very dark. Out of the 6-7 different dungeons, I played they all felt like you were in some kind of cave. It didn't stand out as apparently connected to the world. Like I could say that 4 different dungeons could be some random cave in any of the zones. Even dungeons that were outside were always dark which made them feel enclosed like you were in a cave. More variety of environment would have been nice for dungeons. Each race should stand out to me, but they all feel about the same an elf runs about the same as a human as does a Kahjit. They just feel like humans with other skins plastered on.

Overall it is good as far as MMOs go, but the redundancy of tasks and a lack of visual character makes me unexcited to play it. Maybe in the future, a friend will really want to get into it with me, but for now, I am done with it. It is Skyrim with less polish, but a lot more to do.

I have not had the experience others have had with the lack of solo game play, because similarly I also do not want to interact with the real world, but it may be because I'm not high enough level yet. If I find that I'm not strong enough for an area, there are at least ten other side quests I can grind through to get my level up. I really enjoy it - it's a fun game to play here and there when I'm searching for something new to play (or waiting for my bank account to be full enough where I can finally purchase RDR2)

I do think that I liked this game, but every time I played it I would fall asleep with my controller in my hands within 25 minutes. It's not that it's not interesting or beautiful or mechanically sound! It's just that's kind of not interesting I guess....

But I do enjoy the leveling system since it keeps the Elder Scrolls style but changes it a bit. You can do whatever you want with your characters which is nice, and the combat is okay itself. As weird as it sounds, it's nice to have an MMO that doesn't operate on cooldown periods, but instead just has magic points and whatnot.

I had a hard time mustering up the desire to play it.
